I live in the desert, so evaporative coolers generally work very well here. I upgraded to this one from a KuulAire PACKA53 500 CFM Portable Evaporative Cooling Unit with 325 Square Foot Cooling Capacity, Silver, which worked well, but it wasn't really designed for cooling my whole living room / entry / kitchen area. When I received this unit I was generally impressed with the design. The louvers are easy to move and the controls are easy to understand. There is no remote to lose and I don't feel it is necessary. The fill location is on the top, and is a nice wide funnel shaped area. The water level indicator is too far inside the tank and is very difficult to see without being in bright light or having a flashlight. The plastic casing is molded well but when I took off the back to investigate an issue, I noticed the screws were just screwed directly into the soft plastic. If you remove the media regularly to change or replace, your screw holes will get stripped quickly. I might try to reinforce that area at some point. The casters are very small and don't handle bumps well, but they do have locks which was a nice touch.

I bought it during the off season for a substantial discount, but the unit I received was defective. The fan worked great but the pump does not come on at all. I contacted Honeywell and left a message, but they have yet to return my call. I'll call again tomorrow. I'm wondering now how many people have tried this and decided that evaporative coolers don't work when they just have a defective unit. Normally I would just exchange this since it was DOA, but they don't have any more in stock so I'm going to try to get it repaired.

Bought this 3 weeks ago, and am very happy with it. The build is very solid, this is not a piece of junk.

It is easy to use: Plug in the AC cord, put it near an open window or door, turn the cool dial to on, the speed from 1-3, (1 works fine for me), and swing to on or off, (on means the cooled air is blown around, not just straight ahead.).

Water is poured in through a door on the top. At a my settings, a 90% full tank will last a couple of days at 5 hours use per day. It has a garden hose nozzle that can be used to refill it without carrying pitchers of water back and forth.

The device itself is big, about 34 inches tall, 24 inches wide, and 15 inches deep. Without water, it isn't very heavy, and does have caster wheels on it. Noise level is okay, at least on the 1 setting, sounds like an ordinary box fan.

Reasons you might not want to buy this:

You live in an area with high humidity when it is hot. Evaporative coolers don't work so well in that environment. Works fine where I live, with medium humidity. Probably not so good in New Orleans ;)

Size, it the size of a 1950's era TV.

Otherwise, this is a fine product that looks like it will last for a long time. The filters look to be easily replaceable, if necessary.

I had been looking around for something to put on my patio to help extend our patio season here in Dallas. When June arrives it gets to be a challenge to sit outside most days. Well, I understood how these type coolers worked and didn't have my expectations very high, so I wasn't disappointed. This cooler does work to cool the air around it down somewhat, but don't expect air conditioner levels. The unit itself is a lot bigger than I thought it would be, about 4 ft tall and 3 ft across. I'm glad I sprung for the larger unit because the air flow isn't nearly as stronge as I had hoped for. Inside it would most likely be ideal, but on the patio, you need a lot of air flow. What I really like about this unit is that it has an ice hopper in the top where you can put in ice. By doing this, it does help chill the air down more than without it. Unlike some of the reviews I have read, it does come with the complete attachments required to hook up a standard waterhose. I did read that some experience a bad odor coming from the unit. The manual does say that it will happen during the first few hours of use but I really didn't smell anything very strong, only a slight odor, but that may be because it was outside. So far I am happy with it, but you have to be realistic and understand that it will not give you AC conditions and the higher the humidity the less cool will be produced. I think that it will be a positive addition to my patio.

First of all, be aware that this is an Evaporative Cooler, and not an Air Conditioner. These work best in hot and dry climates. If you live in an area with humidity, this will be nothing more than an expensive box fan. I use this "swamp cooler" to bring down the temperature in my Las Vegas, NV garage woodshop. Personally, I feel that the 850 sq. ft. max cooling area is a bit exaggerated, however this does do a good job. Allow me to share my experience:

-- There is the honeycomb media on all three sides, and it DOES smell, the first time or two you use it. This is normal, and is stated in the manual.

-- Honeywell sells this for less than Lowe's on their website, so make sure to let the store associate know, and they will adjust the price accordingly.

-- This unit has a hose connection on the left side panel, so that you can have a continuous flow of water to the pump instead of filling the 15ish gallon tank several times. In 105 degrees, I had to refill the tank five times throughout the day. TAKE NOTE: the hose connection is not the same size as a garden hose, so you'll need to go to the plumbing fitting section and use the correct step-up/down adapters and some thread seal tape to utilize a typical garden hose.

-- Use proper ventilation techniques - it may seem counterintuitive to crack a door somewhere downwind of the airflow, but you must, to let the humidity escape.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with this unit, and hope it lasts. Getting the hose connection was a bit of a pain, but well worth a couple hours and ten bucks in adapters. Drops the temp in my shop about 20 degrees, and I'd much rather work in 85 degrees than 105.
