As cold temperatures set in, humidity levels drop, cold air is unable to hold as much moisture as warm air. Because of this, when we heat our home the relative humidity levels can drop to as low as 10%. This is drier than the Sahara Desert, and can lead to drier skin, as well as nose and throat discomfort. It can also cause static electricity, and plants and furniture to dry out. Some people experience discomfort when humidity levels are lower than 25%. A comfortable humidity level should be between 40-60%.
Humidity Reduces the Survival of Flu and Viruses on Surfaces and In the Air
In the fight against the flu, your home is a major battleground. Millions of flu particles can linger in the air and on surfaces
we touch day in and day out. Recent studies suggest that humidifiers may play an important role in reducing the survival of the flu virus. Studies have shown that keeping indoor air at an RH level of 40-60% reduces the survival of flu viruses on surfaces and in the air.*
*A study by Environmental Health and Engineering (Environmental Health 2010, 9:55) shows that keeping air at relative humidity levels between 40-60% can reduce survival of flu viruses on surfaces and in the air. Humidifiers can help achieve and maintain this humidity level.

So, several lessons learned. The first is that the Honeywell does do an effective job raising the humidity level quickly in this size room. The next lesson is that it does have the ability to raise the humidity above a comfortable level depending on room size, and with door closed. So, if you buy it you will need to experiment with your own room. Also, be aware that you might want to reduce the dial setting at night so that the room humidity does not climb too high while you are sleeping. From what I have read, keeping the humidity around 50% is good. So run it on high to get to ideal humidity and then dial it back. Also keep in mind that having too high a humidity could cause mold growth.
The unit is very quiet with a slight hum and occasional bubbling sound. It is a nice size and shape. The unit will automatically shut off when out of water, which is nice. The .5 gallon reservoir is good size for filling and carrying. I like that the unit does not require a filter. Filters can get expensive.
One other tip: if you run on your desk, make sure the mist points away from the desk, otherwise the moisture will begin to soak into papers on your desk.
The most important tip is to use the ceiling fan (but not blowing down, of course).
This got good reviews and at first I was almost completely happy. The water capacity was smaller, so I resolved this more frequently than expected.
My problem with the humidifier is that it's broken. I've had it just a hair over a year and it's now useless. I only used purified water in it and cleaned it regularly. Today I noticed a big puddle under my humidifier; I'm not sure what's failing, but the base was full of water, more than should floor through upon putting the top on. I emptied it and tried again and again, water everywhere. When I picked it up, I tilted it slightly and water poured out the knob.
Guess I'm the hunt for another new humidifier.
