We were able to mount the button on a stucco finish wall next t our door by using mounting putty and it stayed put for almost two years. The range is also great. We mounted the speaker in the hallway between the bedrooms, a fair distance from the front door and the button. The chime could be heard clearly through the entire apartment. I'm not sure how well it would do in a larger apartment. Ours was about 1500 square feet. It was just perfect for our space, though, and I would absolutely buy it again if I ever had need of a doorbell in the future.
Today I finally had it because when the postal service came and try to ring our doorbell. That when I noticed it is now dead. It could have been dead long ago.
I contacted Honeywell. They told me there are nothing they can do. So I contacted MHS inc., which is the seller. They pretty told me this never have any issue and tell me to take a lost. BTW, they compare themselves with Walmart service. (6 months) is too long. Once again it could have been dead 30 days since I installed it. Just be caution with the product and especially with MHS & Honeywell.
Pros: The software is easy to install and to use. You can use one of your unprotected mp3 files to make a door chime. The chime is actually your recorded mp3. You can edit the beginning and end to make it fit on the sound card which is a little USB flash drive that holds about a minute's worth of mp3. You can load about 3 different 20 second recordings or one or two longer ones. You can also use MIDI, type 0 and 1 and Wav PCM files. Once you have the clip edited for length, you download it to the little USB flash drive. All this is handled through the provided software and although there aren't many instructions, it's very intuitive. Changing the recordings is easy. You can delete old ones and add new quickly. It took me about 5 minutes. The flash memory then fits into the main unit.
Cons: The product is advertised as "CD quality sound". This sounds pretty much like any of the older, plastic musical door bells that play different tunes. The whole unit is made of plastic and is a little less than 6 inches in diameter. The speaker itself is very small and encased in plastic and that's the way it sounds. Most of the space in the main unit is taken by 3 "C" batteries. (Not included) The sound may be digital but it sounds nothing like "CD quality". The instructions that come with the product says the chimes work best with acoustic clips. Still, I could have lived with the sound. I wasn't expecting perfection.
The doorbell button unit is a little less than 4 inches long, made of plastic and has a tiny indentation where you place a screwdriver to pry off the top. This is where the biggest problem lies with this product. All of the buttons used to change the song or chimes are in this little unit. So every time you want to change it, you have to go outside and pry off the top which isn't easy. This was difficult with two hands, one holding the top and one the bottom. But when the doorbell button is mounted on your door frame with two little screws, it would very difficult to pry off the cover to change the settings. I had planned to mount the button unit with an adhesive strip like I did with my present one, but it wouldn't be possible since you'd pull the whole unit off the door trying to get the top part off every time you wanted to change the chimes. I phoned Honeywell, and they said it has to fit tightly together to make it waterproof and that I should contact Amazon if I wanted to return it.
The idea for this doorbell is a good one, to be able to record your own music or sounds for use as a door chime. It would have been better if all the controls were in the main unit (The white disk that stays in the house) and if it were made of better materials so that the sound would be a little better. I'm not asking for stereo or hi fi, but for just under fifty bucks I expected better quality. The real deal breaker is that the controls for changing the songs are in the button unit outside and it's very difficult to get the cover off without breaking the unit. I will probably return it.
Other reviewers complain saying that it isn't "CD Quality" - Gentlemen, this is a freaking DOORBELL - not a home theater system. When they say "CD Quality", I believe they mean you are hearing a digital representation of your music clip and NOT some synthesized immitation. The thing is only a few inches in diameter - what audio quality where you expecting????
The ONLY reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the little USB flash drive that comes with it can only hold about 4 20 second clips. Oh, and 20 seconds is pleanty for a doorbell sound guys. Honeywell made the thing plug in backwards to the unit - Translation, you can't plug any old USB drive in and use it. I would like it to use a STANDARD usb flash drive so I can easily get as many clips as I want. That said, at LEAST provide one with a little more memory than that! 4 clips is fine, but come on guys - flash drive memory is CHEAP. Why the PROPRIATARY drive with such limited memory?
All in all - GREAT product. Does what I wanted and I'm quite pleased with it.
