Editorial Reviews

After creating three albums of dirty and danceable garage rock anthems, Hollywood's favorite son and Eagles Of Death Metal frontman Jesse 'The Devil' Hughes is unveiling his solo debut as Boots Electric. Honkey Kong was produced by Tony Hoffer (The Kooks, Beck, Depeche Mode) and co-written with legendary keyboardist Marky Mark best known for his collaborations with the Beastie Boys.

I was very excited to hear the Eagles of Death Metal front man Jesse Hughes, AKA Boots Electric, would be releasing a solo album. I really like Eagles of Death Metal. In fact, they are one of my favorite bands out there right now. They are a great sleazed out, bluesy, garage rock band. I don't know if it's because this album is sans Josh Homme, or just because Jesse Hughes is moving forward as an artist, but this is not in the same vein as an Eagles of Death Metal album. It is definitely more dance or electro funk than anything I would have expected by Hughes. Many of the songs are up-tempo and danceable (though I can't dance). In a sense, it is like a sleazier version of Beck's last few electro funk albums. Initially, I was really turned off by the album. It just wasn't what I wanted or expected because I wanted something similar to EODM. I have given the album five or six listens now, and I must say, it has started to grow on me. Coming to it with an open mind, it is a pretty decent album. I should also note, that I enjoy electro funk era Beck. If you do not, this may not be an album for you. If you're willing to accept that it is not an EODM album, than you will probably enjoy this album. Jesse Hughes is always clever and funny in his act, and that definitely shows through on the album. There are a few songs on the album, where touches of early rock and roll shines through in the use of piano and drum beats, but none of the songs sound dated in any way. Overall it's a strong album, not great, but strong. Just know it's different than what you've heard from Hughes before.

Must have for a Boots Electric fan. Eagles of Death Metal is an excellent group, and he is the front man, so I had to give it a try. Of the 10 songs 3 are awesome eargasms, so I consider that a win. I enjoy the rest of the able too.

No it's not EODM, but it is a brilliant group of tracks. This guy definitely knows good music and this album shows that. The music is more on the electronic side, which I have no problem with(some people might), but the melodies and lyrics are great. Just an all around "feel good" album for the end of summer. If you like good music, buy this now!

When I first discovered that Jesse Hughes had done a solo album (after listening to and loving every single Eagles of Death Metal album) I was really excited to hear it. I read reviews on Itunes and online in some places that were saying how dissappointed they were with the album, my heart sank a bit. Then i downloaded the album.....oh my god.....I LOVE this album, it is energetic, artistic, well put together music that is just great to listen to! Easily one of my favorite albums of all thyme. I love Jesse Hughes and everything he does. Rock N Roll forever.
