"When Vampires try to take a bite out of the Big Apple, they'd better watch out. From street gangs to the Mafia to Vatican ninjas, the best and the worst of humanity bond together to save their city. Finn is a master of the fight scene and nonstop action - Honor at Stake will leave you feeling sucked dry." ~ Karina Fabian, of Neeta Lyffe, Zombie Exterminator.
"Honor At Stake is what happens when a monster-killing action flick meets a solid romance and a compelling character study in a world where "good vampires" actually make sense. It is thoroughly enjoyable, and I can't wait for another installment." ~The Catholic Geeks

The first in a series, this novel nicely introduces Marco and Amanda and all of the characters who either are friends, family, or murder victims! It starts out as girl meets guy, but don’t let that fool you. This is vampire meets – oh, I can’t really say it. It would spoil the surprises that roll out in the plot.
Of interest in this story-- the vampire isn’t necessarily horrible or forlorn. And, it’s not a sappy story like Twilight. Declan Finn found a way to make me actually like a vampire. And, he tossed in moments of humanity and a bit of a love story.
But some of my favorite parts were classic Declan Finn, tongue planted firmly in cheek. This author knows how to make acerbic but witty observations with his characters.
After the sweet and sassy beginning, the action comes almost non-stop, punctuated with an occasional scene of seemingly normal domesticity. One of my favorite lines was when Amanda said, “I suck out the fillings from some of the chocolates.”
If you like mystery, action, adventure, fantasy, and a lot of blood, this book is for you. If you enjoy reading martial arts scenes where “fighting is just three-dimensional chess”, you will love this book. This is a unique mix of a thriller, mystery, and vamp romance rolled into one. Highly recommended.
Yes, there's romance in there. No, it's not Anne Rice or Twilight. If anything, 'd call it "Romance with Guns, Explosions, and alot of dead Vampires."
The story takes a little bit to get into, and get itself settled down. But once it does, it kicks into high gear and doesn't stop. The two leads, Marco and Amanda, are pretty well fleshed out, and the world that Declan builds keeps unfolding with interesting ideas and people. Plus, it's really funny. Snark is set to X9000.
I recommend this to anyone who's a fan of the Dresden Files or the tv show Arrow. Great action, great characters, and a great read.
Honor at Stake is a very good read. For one thing, it reinforces the Life-Rule "Do NOT EVER piss off a Krav Maga master. Or a genius with a chemistry lab in his basement."
The plot-line is sufficiently twisty to hold your attention. Quite a few really interesting characters show up at often-unexpected points. Some of them are left with mysterious back-stories that I'm looking forward to in the sequels.
The fight scenes are well-choreographed.
Finn is a master of dialog; there were bits that made me laugh out loud. However, he is absolutely terrible at descriptions; after finishing the book, I have no idea whatsoever what any of the buildings, rooms, or other locales look like - I suspect this is because, as an NYC resident, he thinks that everyone knows what it looks likes (this is a blind spot I've seen in other authors).
The theology in HaS is interesting - I don't think I've ever seen it done quite this way before.
All-in-all, I recommend this book - you will not be disappointed by it. I'm looking forward to the next two.
Good and evil, human and vampire, love and hate, violence and healing - all have a place in Honor at Stake. Mr. Finn has weaved a tale of vampire that make them both timeless and immediate, with a romance in the background that will have you blushing, and then possibly angry at him....but you'll have to find out why for yourself - and believe me - it's worth the read.
Looking forward to his follow up - and finding out what happens between Marco and Amanda.
It was a fairly smooth read and relatively fast paced. Little slow at the begaining but I chalk that up to it being the first in a new series so there was introduction that needed to be done and it really added to the story in the long run.
The action was fantastic though very well written. The only bone I had was with Marcos and Amanda's relationship aspect of the story. It just seems like they are a little dense about each other lol. But that could just be me.
