Cohen wittily describes an incident in which he sang Pacific Northwest songs to a Cree medicine man--songs of Salish, Snohomish, and Suquamish peoples. "And you are--?" asked the elder. "Jewish," Cohen said, to which the medicine man replied contentedly, "Yes, our traditions are so rich." Whether the elder misunderstood or intentionally embraced the newcomer to his land, Cohen never knew. But the anecdote demonstrates Cohen's habit of drawing upon interpersonal experience as well as research to record traditional Native American healing practices as expertly as he has described, in books including the well-regarded Way of Qigong (1997), Asian traditional healing. This book is wonderfully written and very informative on many aspects of Native American spirituality and healing. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and personal experiences that the author wrote about and I have much respect for this man and the sacrifices he has endured to present this wisdom. I honor his contribution.

The only reason why I give this four stars is because some of the information presented can be classified as "New Age" yet the author has a clear bias against New Age spirituality.

Honoring a great trasure

I found this book by lucky accident, "Honoring the Medicine: The Essential Guide to Native American Healing". I am interested in all kinds of healing and in Native Americans, so it seemed a great way to spend my time while waiting for a meeting. I ended up taking the book home and reading and rereading it.

It is the story of a modern man who discovers himself and finds his place among tribal people as a healer. Ken Cohen is able to share his path and enlighten the reader while weaving a facinating story. Spirituality is inseperable from healing and indiginous healers understand this. Modern medical people should read this book and change how medicine is practiced today. There is a basic understanding of humanity and wholistic healing that the Native American healers share.

I had friends who wanted to borrow it, but I was not willing to let it go. Thank goodness for amazon.com - I can buy copies for my friends and not have to give up my copy. I highly recommend this book.

enjoyed the book.
Wish I could met and talk with a man that has had so many wonderful life experiences.
There is so much precious knowledge out there and it is being lost or in danger of being lost or destroyed. So many different cultural practices are dieing out. And who benefits? Definably not the human race, as some of us are slowly discovering. Intention, faith, belief, action, This earth has so much to offer all.
Its ridiculous how we abuse this earth and its people. In doing so we all will loose so much.
Ancient knowledge and healing must be continued and taught to who ever wont's to practice it and pass it.
Thank you K C for an interesting read as well as some practices I can incorporate in my life.

A very interesting read

As someone who is pursuing the same calling, I am very much enjoying this book. I am a non-Native, one of the Maka Oyate, who is researching and practicing Native medicine. It is very helpful to receive the understanding of someone who is already where I want to be, given the reluctance of Native elders to teach their medicine ways.
