Well-edited and meticulously researched, Honor's Banner is a history lover's novel, rich with the devastating political and socio-economic tribulations of the Southerner. Beyond the rich writing, however, are the familiar and well-loved characters from Camellia Creek. I've long said that no one crafts complex, nuanced, believable characters like Ms. Russell--and the fact that the represent the post-War South makes them an even bigger delight.
I can't go into the plot here without revealing spoilers, but the intrigue of this dark whodunit will keep you turning pages long into the night. And the ending was a sweet, sublime note after chapters of dark, tension. No vapid, bodice-ripper here. Honor's Banner is a suspenseful novel for the thinker, the modern Southerner, the history buff, and anyone who longs for a well-crafted novel written "like they used to".
