The plot with the brother was also very interesting. There was lots of action and I was so enthralled. I didn’t want to put the book down. I tend to skip through the parts when the MC’s think through their issues. These inner monologues can get boring and sometimes annoying. But not these 2; especially Duncan. They had interesting thoughts that I found myself reading every line.
Great book and I can see me reading this again. I recommend.
Typically, I am not a historical romance fan, but lately they have been becoming more and more attractive and I have been finding myself seeking them out constantly now. This one I actually found while searching for “a heroine who has been injured” because I love when the heroine gets injured and the big strong alpha male worries sick over her and nurses her back to health! Well this was perfect in that aspect because it was just enough of an injury to show us he cared but not too much that it drag on to the point its ludicrous.
Enough rambling and on to the review…
Lady Madeline has suffered greatly at the hands of her sick and twisted brother, Baron Louddon. Planning to escape his cruelty, Madeline makes and escape plan to leave her brother and travel to Scotland to her cousin that she hope will take her in. Lady Madeline’s plans go awry however, when on the eve before her departure, Baron Duncan of Wexton – the Wolf, is taken captive by her brother. Duncan is tied to a post in the middle of a courtyard, stripped of his clothing and left to die by freezing to death. Lady Madeline has had enough of her brothers cruelty and when the guards, she sets out to release Baron Duncan and help him escape. Little did she know that Duncan didn’t come for Louddon – he came for Madeline.
Duncan has know idea what to think about Madeline. He purposely got himself captured in order to infiltrate Baron Louddon’s lands to capture Lady Madeline in repayment for the cruelty Louddon inflicted on Duncan’s sister. What Duncan did not expect was the very women he was sent to capture, was the one to free him from his own self-inflicted captivity. Beyond curious, he lets Madeline “rescue” him only to find out she is nothing like the cruel brother she lives with. Upon seeing her charm, beauty and innocence, Baron Duncan takes Madeline with him but also vows that she belongs to him and he will protect her.
I am not sure I could have read this book fast enough. The story was believable and touching and the characters were outstandingly detailed. It literally hooks you from the very start when Lady Madeline warms Duncans feet. From then on, it is a battle of stubbornness between both Madeline and Duncan. Where Duncan is an alpha male always used to control and cannot understand the difference between being a family and a Baron, Madeline is a compassionate, smart, loving and brave. When these two are thrown together neither knows what is going on. They are both befuddled by their own reactions and albeit scared of what they feel for each other.
There are so many words for this book and yet I don’t know what to say. There is mystery, comedy, love (two of them!) and of course, a Happily Ever After. A book I never thought I would enjoy at first to be honest because the synopsis does not give this book justice! But alas, this has become a favorite of mine and will easily be placed on the rereads shelf.
The whole story is magnificent. One of Garwood's best. I wish the brothers had their story told!

Set in the medieval times, this book gives us fierce Baron Duncan of Wexton who seeks revenge against the man who raped his sister, what he doesn't count on is falling in love with the women he aims to use in order to gain his revenge - Madelyne.
At times Madelyne's switch from meek to defiant and back again had me pausing ever so slightly but it didn't drive me mad.
There's a sweet and gentle tone to this one that I enjoy.
Potential Triggers: References to rape and murder.
I am now a little addicted now to her stories, I have read most of her books more than once. Even though they are more expensive than a lot of other romance books, you do get a lot more for your money in content and length of her books...
