Editorial Reviews

Peter Ingersoll (Jerry Lewis, The Nutty Professor) is living a humdrum existence as a family man and insurance salesman when he finds out from his doctor friend, Scott (Peter Lawford, Ocean’s Eleven), that he has a terminal illness. Thinking that his life is nearly over, he lives life to the fullest, building up insurmountable debt. When the debt becomes too much, Scott tells Peter that he is actually not sick. To remove the debt, Scott comes up with the idea to stage Peter’s death, allowing him to return after the statute of limitations is done. But when Peter finds out that his wife (Anne Francis, Funny Girl) and Scott are having an affair and that this was all a scheme to get rid of him, Peter has some work to do in this zany comedy. Newly remastered.

HOOK, LINE & SINKER has a terrible reputation. Some critics such as Leonard Maltin in his MOVIE GUIDE call the film a bomb. I don't agree. While it's not prime Jerry it's certainly better, imo, than some of his other late 60's titles such as WAY WAY OUT! & DON'T RAISE THE BRIDGE, LOWER THE RIVER. Like those other Lewis films this is not a film directed by Lewis himself, but rather by old Hollywood hand George Marshall, whose career went back to the silent days, and whose final feature film this would be.

There is a good plot in this film. Lewis' doctor (Peter Lawford) tells Jerry that he has a heart condition and limited time left, his wife (the beautiful Anne Francis) tells him he should make the most of the time that is left and enjoy his final days doing what he loves--fishing--in exotic locales using only the best equipment on chartered boats, etc. It will cost a fortune--of course Lewis doesn't have that kind of money, but his wife tells him to put it all on credit cards and not worry about the bills--his insurance will pay for it when he croaks. The trouble is that it's all a set-up and Lewis is not dying and the doctor and wife are in cahoots.

There are some good sight gags in the film--a wild dance by a drunken Jerry and an amusing scene where he breaks into a morgue by coming thru a window and attempting to light a candle. That is all vintage stuff, but for a lot of the picture it's a black comedy which Lewis plays fairly straight and allows others to shine--such as the always terrific Kathleen Freeman playing baby sitter to Lewis and Francis's children.

This film (released by Columbia) was released 20 years after the first Jerry Lewis film, MY FRIEND IRMA.

After not having seen this movie since the early 70's,I forgot how well Jerry came across in his role. The Idiot never appears
and it's a more grown up comedy in that sense. The drunk scene had me thinking about what made Jerry so good, and the
hangover scene brought back memories of my younger days. The ending has a nice twist to cap an overall fine movie. The
only thing that might have made it a slightly better movie is if Jerry had been in the Directors chair, but to non Lewis fans this
is a movie they would watch and enjoy.Overall a well done effort, not Jerry's best but better than any of the Martin/Lewis movies.

Listen, all you have to say is that this is a Jerry Lewis movie. All of us from this time definitely remember him with a great deal of fondness as we do his movies. This like all his movies was a lot of fun, sit back and enjoy. Love when he plays drunk.

If you thought some of the earlier "Jerry Alone"were very good to NUTTY great ..well to quote HIM...THIS ONE IS A DILLY !! -taken from one of his lines in the hospital ampatheater, Mexico-. His medical audience in this movie..the Doctors, Nurses' featrured extras, are a RYE-UT,by themselves.I thought this movie was done in '65!!! Can't trust memory ...its from'69(!?!)!
Jerry always knew had to make a film, directing, writing, acting/performing impromptu at times. And in this he is still the brillant clown../yet still his cool palm springs/LA self...GOT IT! Goood.... You can only watch "Rocka' My Baby" and older "way Out West" and- all the others ..ah... soo many times(?) Dean calls him a "Idiot" in the film, (I say it was spontaneous..? "get lost I'm done with you" etc. watch how Jerry out does the whole th..thing..and all like that). Hook Line and Sinker was a very pleasnt surprise to get after years have gone bye-bye. Its a creative, funny, engaging , work of talented movie romp and improve.

I remembered watching this movie years ago on t.v. and really thought it was funny. I had been trying to find/purchase it for years to add to my Jerry Lewis collection. I still believe it is a funny movie in Jerry Lewis classic comedy style. If you enjoy Jerry Lewis, you'll enjoy this movie.
