There is a good plot in this film. Lewis' doctor (Peter Lawford) tells Jerry that he has a heart condition and limited time left, his wife (the beautiful Anne Francis) tells him he should make the most of the time that is left and enjoy his final days doing what he loves--fishing--in exotic locales using only the best equipment on chartered boats, etc. It will cost a fortune--of course Lewis doesn't have that kind of money, but his wife tells him to put it all on credit cards and not worry about the bills--his insurance will pay for it when he croaks. The trouble is that it's all a set-up and Lewis is not dying and the doctor and wife are in cahoots.
There are some good sight gags in the film--a wild dance by a drunken Jerry and an amusing scene where he breaks into a morgue by coming thru a window and attempting to light a candle. That is all vintage stuff, but for a lot of the picture it's a black comedy which Lewis plays fairly straight and allows others to shine--such as the always terrific Kathleen Freeman playing baby sitter to Lewis and Francis's children.

and it's a more grown up comedy in that sense. The drunk scene had me thinking about what made Jerry so good, and the
hangover scene brought back memories of my younger days. The ending has a nice twist to cap an overall fine movie. The
only thing that might have made it a slightly better movie is if Jerry had been in the Directors chair, but to non Lewis fans this
is a movie they would watch and enjoy.Overall a well done effort, not Jerry's best but better than any of the Martin/Lewis movies.
Jerry always knew had to make a film, directing, writing, acting/performing impromptu at times. And in this he is still the brillant clown../yet still his cool palm springs/LA self...GOT IT! Goood.... You can only watch "Rocka' My Baby" and older "way Out West" and- all the others ..ah... soo many times(?) Dean calls him a "Idiot" in the film, (I say it was spontaneous..? "get lost I'm done with you" etc. watch how Jerry out does the whole th..thing..and all like that). Hook Line and Sinker was a very pleasnt surprise to get after years have gone bye-bye. Its a creative, funny, engaging , work of talented movie romp and improve.
