No-one sees Anna Jones. They never have. And they’ve made her feel ugly, unworthy and isolated in the process. Her childhood was one she would rather forget, and after seeing first hand how her mother had her heart broken more than she cared to count, Anna vowed to never become that woman. She would never allow herself to become vulnerable to a man, to fall in love. So she moved cities, started her life again with her two best-friends and believed it was all she needed in her life to be happy.
“He’s slowly carving his name into my heart. And it hurts.”
Drew Baylor is the gorgeous quarterback everyone loves. In fact he’s probably one of my favourite book boyfriends right now. But underneath his confident exterior, there’s a lonely guy longing for someone in his life. After the death of his parents, he was left with more than enough money to support himself, but that wasn’t enough. Until the gorgeous, firey, stubborn redhead sitting next to him in class leaves him completely speechless, he’s never wanted anything more.
“She glared at me. I didn’t care. One word was playing a loop in my head: mine.”
This story begins as a seriously addictive friends – with – benefits arrangement, where regular hook-ups set the pages of my kindle on fire in every single chapter. These two have exceptional chemistry. The witty dialogue and fun banter were what had drawn me to keep reading in the first place. The epilogue was one of the best I’ve ever read. I’m always looking for a book to draw me in and hook me from the very first chapter, and this book did just that.
Drew and Anna had a lot of moments where my heart just ached for them. Anna was really struggling with accepting what Drew wanted from her. She had removed the thought of settling down with anyone from her mind, yet Drew wants no-one but her. This added a whole new level of angst to the story as they navigated their way around these emotions they had no idea had snuck up on them. And I’ll be honest, I put my kindle down a few times for a breather. My heart ached for them both.
“Drew doesn’t make me feel like myself. He makes me feel better than myself. As if there is a little broken part in me, rattling and loose, and whenever he’s near it falls into place and tightens. The thought has me withdrawing, sinking into that cold, thick place that chokes me. I’m beginning to need him too much.”
Among the heartache, there was so much love. And there was heaps of fun banter between Anna and Drew as well Anna and her best-friends Iris and George – and these scenes had me smiling like an idiot! Their romance was a gorgeous, hot mess that I couldn’t get enough of. It made me kick myself for waiting so long to give this series a go, but I’m sooooo glad I finally did!
You should definitely start with this book. I’ve added the rest of the series below in order. I’ve now read book 1 & 4 (read my review here), and feel as though you can read them on their own, but as always, the interconnecting stories and characters are always nice to know from the beginning.
Drew Baylor is the star quarterback for his alma mater and Anna Jones the book worm who keeps out of sight. Drew lives up to his position of fame in unexpected ways. He's the down to earth, elusive, witty guy with a killer smile and all kinds of panty melting charm. Anna Jones is smart, shy, beautiful, and quirky trying to find her place in the world. She carries with her a host of issues she tries to repress only Drew brings them to light. She's quick on the sass and can fire away at Drew's probing like no other. The two of them spark something in each other neither saw coming.
I freaking loved this story. I devoured it in a day because I was so charged by these characters and their presence. The author's writing was superb and engaging. Her knowledge of college athletics was on point as well as the issues and vulnerability of this time in our lives. Coupled with falling in love without even wanting to during this time made it that much more intriguing to read.
It was simple reading with low levels of crazy angst. Just two people discovering each other with good conflict present. Their banter was honestly some of the best parts. The secondary characters complimented the story greatly. The level of sex in this story pleasantly surprised me and catapulted Drew and Anna even higher. Strong characters, intriguing plot, excellent writing and tons of romance comprise The Hook Up. I seriously loved it and can't wait to read more.
I’ve decided that it’s high time I started reading some of the books that are already on my kindle and/or I’ve had on my TBR forever, hence the reason I’m just now getting around to this one. So far, I have to say it’s paying off. I loved this book!
I didn’t expect to love The Hook Up as much as I did. To be honest, I was kind of anticipating just your typical NA novel that’s overdone and underwhelming but I was utterly surprised. Now, can some of that be attributed to the fact that I haven’t really read much NA in a long time? Maybe. But I don’t think so.
This was my first Kristen Callihan novel and I’m so impressed. Excellent writing, likeable characters with depth and personality, funny and engaging dialogue, just the right amount of drama, and way more feels than I was expecting. Oh yeah, and it was super hot! This book hit all my buttons.
I can’t even stand football and I loved this book and sympathized with Drew’s character and what he was going through. I didn’t really understand all of Anna’s emotional hang-ups but I still liked her and found her issues believable. Even the minor supporting characters were entertaining and brought something to the table. They weren’t just two-dimensional placeholders.
I’m so pleased with myself that I randomly chose this book. I’m so excited to have discovered a new-to-me author that I thoroughly enjoy. I’m very much looking forward to reading more of her. If you’re like me and still have this one waiting on your kindle or TBR, or even if this is the first you’re hearing of it, read it!!
