PreS-K—Owl is "wide awake and ready to play," confident that "this will be a good, good day." Donning a hat, tooting a horn, waving balloons in the air, and sharing a storybook, she hopes to inspire her animal friends to join in some rollicking fun. Unfortunately, it is late and each one is too drowsy to participate, leaving a disappointed Owl to return home with head hanging low. Later, as the sun starts coming out, she finds them wide awake and ready to play. This time, she is the weary one and begs for a brief delay until after her nap, when she is again raring to go and announces, "HOORAY, LET'S PLAY!" In short rhymes, using plenty of simple repetition, Won's picture book is ideal for children having trouble surrendering to nighttime sleep. The subtle message is that there will be enough time to play—but only after bedtime. Won's opening background pages of dark midnight blue stands in stark contrast to the bright, vivid colors of the festive-looking Owl. This is followed by lighter violet hues as dawn approaches and the sun begins to rise alongside Owl's perkier, well-rested buddies. Children will giggle seeing Zebra with eyes tightly closed and forepaws against his ears while Owl toots a horn atop his head. They should pick up on the word HOORAY referring to more than Owl's happy-go-lucky attitude about celebrating a new day. VERDICT A winning read-aloud sure to resonate best with preschoolers reluctant to bed down for the night and for ardent fans of Won's Hooray for Hats.—Etta Anton, Yeshiva of Central Queens, NY

Edit: So it's been a couple weeks since I've read this for him, and this is the first book he wants to read. He loves the illustrations, he loves the characters, and he gets super excited when he opens the flap on the back and sees the Owl under it. Then he sees the image of "Hooray for Hat" on the flap, then wants to read that as well. We've got a mix of Korean and English children's books at home, but he generally gravitates towards the Korean books since that is the language we speak inside the house, so him enjoying this book so much says a lot.
"Hooray For Today" is the sequel to "Hooray For Hat", written and illustrated by the same author. the illustrations are excellent and the story reads very well for my kids' age range. The characters are fun and colorful and the optimistic message is great, especially for my boys who struggle to see the brighter side of things sometimes. This is one of our designated family reading books my kindergartner chose for his class assignment and it has been great to settle down at the end of the day and read the book before the boys go to bed.
cute & simple
emotional & funny
As a grown up, I learned something positive but it's really hard to explain what exactly it is. I think the author put all his effort to make people read the book again and again to find that positive answer. I wonder if kids these days are clever enough to discover that mysteriously positive message. Great book.
Hooray for Hat! And this new book doesn't disappoint. The story is sweet and as a night owl myself I can relate to Owl who simply wants to play at night when all her friends are asleep. Love the illustrations it reminds me of a time long ago when I was growing up. Can't wait to share this with all my friends I already bought several copies to give as gifts.
