Update 07/2013-

My second unit of this appliance died. First the brush bar started failing and then the motor stopped working. I had it almost exactly two years, just as I did the first unit, and bam, dead. My first one cost under $50. and the second one almost $60. I see now the price as of 07/2013 is almost 180.--that is just ridiculous for a little vac like this. $60 was the cap for me.

See below for my review on how it performs.

Quick review-My first one died as stated below in June 2011. I did purchase another after my first completely died (after 1 1/2 years) because I could not find ratings or comments on another item that were as good and it is still going but performance is starting to degrade. I will be blunt-the people that report it breaks down in a month or 6 months must abuse the heck out of it. Because I use mine to clean my apartment flooring in whole, which it is not meant to do, and it's still going. I have two long hair cats and my daughter and I both have long hair, we have all tile floors except for an oriental rug, so I'm not trying to clean wall to wall carpet with it, maybe that is the difference.

The problem with this unit as others have mentioned is the inability to open up the bottom and remove and clean or replace the roller brush bar. I believe that is what causes this vac to go bad. You can't take it out and completely get all the hair off the roller or out of the corner mounts. Thus, the bar cannot turn properly, You can clean it every use but over time it just works down in the corners.

I've purchased a Shark Navigator (small to mid size vac)and will cut my Hoover Flair abuse to quick clean ups, my bathroom, and to get under furniture. This is more inline for what it's made for so it should be fine. If it dies on me then I will probably go with the 200 model as it costs a little less.

My Hoover jammed up and died. Granted my college age daughter used it and jammed the roller with hair. I was unable to get it working. So, I cannot say it was product failure as it was abused in this instance. I however managed not to break off any of the components during my year and 1/2 ownership despite the wobblyness of the unit causing it to fall over easily. It was a great little unit, with my flooring being all tile save for an oriental rug, it worked great and was much more mobile than my large vac. I'm contemplating buying another. If I do, and it also dies on me after such a short time, I'll update again.

The original stiffness of the wheels gave after a few uses. Evidently the components were a little stiff. It picks up very well on my oriental carpet and on my floor. I find it pretty darn great to use, but still say it is wobbly and it falls over easily. I keep expecting it to fall over and the hook to wind the cord around to break on the impact. If it had a hose and was not so wobbly it would be perfect.

I was looking for a good stick vacuum with strong pick up, good edging, and easy to use for a quick pick up and to get in corners/edges. I did my research, and all the ratings and review boards gave this vac the top spot. I went through and read some of the reviews here on Amazon. So I ran down to Walmart thinking I'd look it over in person and then do my best price shopping. I couldn't find it in my area. I can tell you Walmart, K Mart, Sears, Lowes, and Home Depot did not carry this product. So I looked at other products and none made any better impression. I found the best price at Amazon for this Hoover and purchased it.

So here is the result of my test drive vacuuming my tile floor and my oriental rug:

1. I thought I read in the description and in a couple of reviews that it came with a hose attached but it does not. That was one of the selling points for me, and I don't know if I read something wrong and/or the 'with Power Nozzle' in the title made me think it had an attachment.

2. The suction was pretty darn good including the edge, on the tile.

5. Standing upright it seems strangely wobbly. This is due to the swivel ability of the vac when you lay it prone to vacuum under stuff-it swivels/rotations for extra mobility which it nice and the second reason it got the 3rd star from me.

6. The cord is a pretty decent length.

7. It fills up fast but what stick doesn't?

Rechargeable vs. Plug-in Vacuums

I originally wanted to purchase a rechargeable stick vacuum, but after doing a couple hours of research, it seemed that every vacuum contained a review that said it sometimes did not pick up everything, like a "Cheerio" on the kitchen floor for example. So I figured what's the point of having the convenience of a rechargeable vacuum if it isn't going to vacuum well. (?)

Therefore, I did some more research and went with this plug-in vacuum... and I am glad that I did. The suction power is excellent and it picks up everything that a light vacuum should. Last week it even picked-up a small metal screw that was sitting in the corner of my kitchen floor (with the rotating brush turned OFF). *Cheerios beware!* The fact that you can turn off the rotating brush to vacuum hard floors is a great feature as well. Bottom line is, that if you want excellent suction power, you're just going to have to bite-the-bullet go with a plug-in version. No battery pack in the world is going to compete with the power of a 110-Volt outlet. This Hoover stick vacuum is a perfect choice and I highly recommend it.

UPDATE: 2/2013

Well, though the 4-star rating remains accurate, I have since changed my preferences on "plug-in vs. cordless". This Hoover worked GREAT for about 2 years, then I gave it to a friend (but keep in mind that I only used it about twice a month). The reason that I gave it away was because that I learned a big lesson after I bought it, and that was that I deeply missed the super-quick convenience of a "cordless" stick vacuum, (which is why I just never used this plug-in version nearly as often as I should have).

So after 2 years of using this vacuum (with NO problems), awhile back I decided that I simply wanted the connivence of a cordless vacuum (even at the sacrifice of less power). I did a lot of research, and ordered this one (below link). I now use this cordless model ALL THE TIME (1-2 times a week) and for a rechargeable, the power is "excellent" (uses a 6-volt battery). And don't let the low $33 price fool you, for it is easily 10x better than the other popular "Cordless Swivel Sweeper" vacuum (which I borrowed once from a neighbor).

If you want lots of power, go for this Hoover's plug-in model, for it worked great for the 2 years that I had it. But also take note of the above lesson that I learned, and that was not to underestimate the AWESOME "convenience factor" of a powerful cordless model. It can "look good" sitting in a kitchen, and be ready to use within seconds. Plus it doesn't have the 20-foot long cord you have to tightly wrap-up after every use. And just like this Hoover plug-in model, you can also switch the brush OFF for use on hard floors.

Just remember, this cordless vacuum uses a nickel-cadmium battery (which DOES have a "memory effect") and must ONLY be charged when it is almost completely DEAD (unlike lithium-ion or metal-hydride rechargeable batteries which should be charged as often as possible). Otherwise the nickel-cadmium's battery's "charging capacity" will shorten quite dramatically after every charge. And don't worry, nickel-cad's keep their voltage consistently high throughout the cycle, so you will experience very little loss of power throughout the charge.

However, to make a possible "return" much easier, I bought the above cordless model at a local Super-Walmart here in Denver for the same exact price as Amazon (plus tax). Needless to say I was very happy with it and never returned it. (Walmart being the better option here if your uncertain about the purchase).

So, I would actually recommend BOTH vacuums, and give them both a solid 4-stars. It really just comes down to a matter of what is more important to you...power or connivence. If you have messy kids, for example, you'll probably want to go for the extra-power of the plug-in model. Otherwise, the cordless model does a great job for slightly "less challenging" vacuuming. The cordless is great mind you, but it will probably not pick-up something like a small metal screw "as well as" the plug-in model will. Hope this helps.
