Amazon.com Review
Poor, long-suffering Dad deserves a little lift every once in a while, and who better to boost than Dr. Seuss? In this funky pop-up adaptation of the classic Hop on Pop, kids do their best to perk up Pop after a bad day. The furry yellow Seuss-critters know "it's best not to HOP on POP," but "we like to hop. / We like to hop / on top of Pop. / STOP!" Other, more human-looking children give their fathers gifts, such as "a set of Slim Jim Swim Fins" (pink, three-toed marvels), violin serenades, and for the man who has everything... "a Bright Dwight Bird-Flight Night-Sight Light." Clever paper engineering livens up this six-spread volume (not that anything by Dr. Seuss ever needed enlivening). Young readers will love making the gleeful characters hop on pop over and over, and will laugh to see the walrus (another less-than-welcome gift) licking one poor daddy's ear. It's hard to say who will enjoy this more: fathers or their well-meaning little urchins. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

My wife purchased this book for our Kindergartener after she (my daughter) had requested it. She had seen it in her school library and was very excited to show us how funny the idea of "hopping on pop" (on me!!) was and that she could read some of the words. After we got it, she found that she was able to read the whole thing all the way through. She was so surprised and proud of herself! If you want to build confidence in your child and develop a love for reading-this is a great book.
The reason this is so great for an early reader is pretty genius! The book starts off easy enough, with a couple of rhyming phrases per page (like; HOP ON POP, etc.). As the story moves on, the rhyming words are replaced (sometimes only by changing out a letter-as in H-A-T to C-A-T).
While a simple idea, it provides a great learning and reinforcement tool for your child that is twofold: (1) your child learns new words by "building" on a previously known word by having to change the initial sound to match the new letter on the rhyming word, and (2) by showing them the importance of letters and their placement in a word to change its sound.
The book is never overly difficult, but rather, perfectly paced for an emerging or first time reader. And of course, true to Dr. Seuss fashion, the artwork is engaging, wonderful and funny all at the same time. This is by far, my daughter's favorite book at the moment and she won't hesitate to offer to "read the whole book" to anyone who is willing to listen! She is developing a real love of reading from this.
If you are a "pop" or know of one with a new reader, this classic is just the ticket! Definitely a winner for our family.

I have a working theory that this book teaches kids to read. I know, it’s a bold statement. It really does help them gain confidence, and if you play the audiobook with it you don’t get tired of reading it. There are several C-V-C words so even very early readers can sound out some! I love this book!

When I was a little girl, I use to beg my mom to read me this book. She did over and over again and it became the first book I learned to read as a pre-schooler. I read it to my children and they loved it just as much. This is a wonderful book to teach some reading skills. The illustrations keep children interested and the simple words and phonetics are perfect for young children who are pre readers or just learning to read.

I loved reading this book when I was young and was excited to introduce it to my child who is in the first stages of reading. My 4 year old can't read every word yet, only 3/4 letter words, but those can be found on almost every page so it keeps his mind going. It's also great that some of the sight words he'll need for kindergarten are incorporated so he'll have a head start for class in a couple of years. If you're looking for a story line, there isn't one, but I can say the wackiness is very entertaining. I read other reviews that have said that this version is a rewrite, however I didn't notice the differences. Maybe it's just been that long since I've read it. (Although I totally understand the frustrations of those who we're expecting original content.)

I purchased this a a gift for my physical therapist's young daughter. The 2 year-old was absolutely delighted when her mother and father read the book to her. Getting children interested in reading at an early age is certainly helped by books by Dr. Seuss! I highly recommend this book if you have young children or as a gift to a young child.

This is a great book. This was one of my favorite Dr Seuss books when I was little. I could resite it word for word I had read it so many times. I got this one for a baby shower gift. They requested books with something personal written inside instead of cards. I loved this idea, because how many cards have you purchased and they just get thrown away. The price was great too, about the same as a card. With the special buy 2 get the third free, so I shared the price with 2 other people that are going.

I bought this book as my toddler has just started branching out from board books. We have been reading Great Day for Up a LOT so I looked for other Dr Seuss books. This one is pretty wordy and long....not great for right now but I think it will be good for her in the future. That said great quality publishing and I think she will enjoy it in the time to come!

This is a great book for young people who are just starting to read. Dr. Seuss wrote fantastic books for young children who are of a novice reading level. The style of writing consists a limited vocabulary well understood by most beginners and a very clever repititive/poetic pattern which appeals to young readers. It is amazing that a complete book could be written using so few words. Hop on Pop is very good for those who do not know many words but know a few and would like to learn more.

A great first book

There is something wonderful that happens when your child first picks up a Dr Seuss book. They love them and the adults find them funny too. Great illustrations and the poetry of the words are very good for teaching kids to read without them even knowing it. "Mouse on House, House on Mouse" - they laugh when they see the house on top of the mouse.

I loved this book as a child and it is one of the earliest books I remember well (end of the '60s!), so it was an obvious choice when looking for a book for a very small person! Delivery from Courtyard Books was really quick, thank you John!

Stop! You must not hop on pop!
But you must buy this book if you love a giggle with your kids. Makes learning to read so much fun, a real classic.
