By Richard R. Blake VINE VOICE on October 3, 2008
Format: Paperback
David Hess tells his story of being embraced by God's presence in the toughest of times after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. This was the beginning of Dave's desperate battle against death.

A praying church, a loving family, and the promises of a miracle working God all worked together to point David to the open door of hope that took him through the dark hours of chemotherapy, blood transfusions, platelet transfusions, delirious fevers, infections, pneumonia, and a ruptured appendix.

Throughout his hospitalization David's faith encouraged hospital staff, other patients, and the members of his church. Seeing the miracles of healing in others, changed lives, and with the miracle of David has been called to a ministry of point other to the open door of hope offered by the Lord Jesus Christ.

I found the final chapter and the reunion with his individual family members tender and heartwarming. These emotion packed moments that reveal how having "dad" home affected each family member differently as they faced the prospect of losing their father.

Each chapter includes a section titled "My Personal Journal of Hope." Insights and probing questions included in these journals challenged me: to step our of my comfort zone, to develop a new dependence on Christ, and to make a difference in someone else's life.

"Hope Beyond Reason" is a positive testimony relating the story of Pastor Dave Hess and battle against death. David's writing is heart-wrenching and inspirational. David offers an open door of hope to everyone during their desperate hour of crisis.

I read the book in one sitting. Dave's openness and honesty about his journey through the valley of cancer was fascinating. I told my wife a few excerpts from the story and found myself in tears--it's a touching story. Dave's vulnerability and faith in the Lord Jesus is inspiring. His experience of healing is something he wants others to experience. Anyone who is facing cancer or any life threatening illness should read this book.

This is absolutely a must read, even for those who don't like to read. You can always get the audio version. Dave Hess' personal experience with acute cancer is an encouragement to all. You don't have to have a life threatning disease to get something from this. I personally would prefer to learn it through someone else's experience. I'm not much of a reader but I slam dunked this one in 3 hrs flat. I just couldn't put it down. WOW! Everyone should have access to this and give it a chance. It will pop you right out of any duldrums you may be having. I loved it so much that I'm buying 5 more for friends. I can hardly wait to see their reaction with me suggesting a book to read...ha This is worth it....get it, It will change your life.

The book is probably one of the best books I've read in a very long time! Pastor Hess talks about surviving his battle with acute Leukemia. More then once he was not expected to live and more then once, God had a different plan. The heart and soul in this book is one of hope and a hope that draws you closer to God, not based on what He does, but who He is. I believe, even if Pastor Hess' outcome had been different, there would still be a story to tell, still a story of hope.

God will speak into your life through this book. God is still God and He is still on the throne. Miracles happen and prayer works! Testimonies remind us that God is real, alive and loves His children. Pastor Hess' openness and writing style make you feel like you're sitting in front of him, listening to him recap everything for you personally.

Do yourself a favor, get this book and read it! God bless you as you do so!!

Pastor Dave Hess writes a very personal story of his battle with leukemia, and how his ever-abiding faith in the Lord gave him hope to persevere through and gain the ultimate victory. Psalm 71:14 states: "But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more". During his fight with leukemia, Dave Hess lived this verse. His first reaction to hearing the diagnosis of acute leukemia (the most dangerous kind), was not to begin treatment immediately, but to tell his family and then pray with them. He recognized that his battle would not only be the physical, but involve the spiritual as well. Grounded in prayer, he underwent the prescribed medical care (three rounds of chemotherapy); he lost his hair, but never lost his faith. At his lowest point, nearly exhausted and close to death, an angel visited him and comforted him. He also prayed for fellow sufferers, and witnessed healing of their illnesses as well. Finally, with no leukemia detectable, but still in a very fragile immune state, he contracts acute appendicitis, and with this he faces his final hurdle to wellness, and the miracle which occured to save his life is too good to reveal here.

When we are faced with our own mortality, we cope in diverse ways. Dave Hess chose to make the Lord his strong fortress and believe that his fate and life were in the hands of the Great Physician. The prayer support he received from his family, his faithful wife, and his church, is certainly part of why he survived this deadly disease. His recovery from luekemia proves there is hope beyond reason.

This book is written in a format conducive to small group Bible study, with questions and discussion points after each chapter (there are 13 chapters).
