Throughout the book, I was encouraged to realize and connect with my pain, ask God hard questions, and learn to listen and look for the answers. After reading many books on the difficult subject of forgiveness, I believe the author describes it well, as a pathway for survivors to release our pain and desire for revenge to God and receive freedom from the past (rather than simply "forgiving and forgetting").
Cameron lovingly offers practical tools and carefully describes how to use them, including prayers and reflection questions for dealing with and moving toward healing. It feels like taking a difficult journey with the love and guidance of a best friend who has already been there.
The Bible story of a hurting woman who reached out to touch the hem of Jesus' robe is richly interwoven throughout each chapter and models hope, faith and courage in the midst of pain. It also reflects Jesus' tender way of relating to her, simply because she believed in healing through Him.
If you or someone you love is a survivor of sexual abuse, regardless of where your healing journey might be, I strongly recommend Sue Cameron's Hope, Healing, and Help for Survivors of Sexual Abuse. Those who would like to learn more or use this book in a small group format would find it beneficial, as well.
*I found the questionnaires to be an interesting tool. I feel some readers would benefit from these "fill in" activities. This book would also be useful in a group setting due to this feature.
It's obvious the author understands the heart of the issue and earnestly desires to see others find freedom after sexual abuse.
Even if you think you've long since healed from sexual abuse in your past I'd suggest picking this book up.
I didn't read it for the express purpose of working on myself but found that as I was evaluating the book I was healing myself.
If you're scared about facing your past and experiences in sexual abuse this book is also a great private tool to work with.
I was thoroughly impressed by the heart, clarity, and effectiveness of this book. I recommend it!!
