I know I it received through Amazon, but don't remember the link that took me there for a free copy. This was so outstanding I chose to review in the hope other readers would pick it up. This is my honest review. I hope you will download it as it is truly an amazing beginning of a woman's life. I haven't any reservations at all recommending it.
Hope is not a character from the imagination of this author, however this presented tale inspired one of Ryn Shell's memorable characters in The Stolen Years.
Brilliantly written with a laid back flow, this first person POV takes readers along on a journey that begins with two young sisters, following the orders of their mum when they get surprised by the reappearance of their often absentee father arriving home in a cab. Their palpable excitement shifts suddenly as you feel an ominous cloud hanging over their lives, although this is something the author slowly walks readers through.
Set in early 1950's Australia, this is a lovely yet emotional story of children who endure abuse on varying levels and emotions and how they mentally escape what they don't want to accept as reality.
If you have not read author Shell's work, I believe Hope will propel you to check out her tales, especially those based on Emily's character.
Yes, many people suffer much worse as small children, but this story is one that somehow pulls together in a way that lets others know you can move beyond a dysfunctional childhood. Is there always a generous person who steps in to offer guidance? No. But thankfully in this story, a policeman offers hope as does the open school setting that I feel would be a cure for almost everything that ails us.
First of all, I love the cover of this novella. It certainly depicts the content of this inspirational story as Author Ryn Shell eloquently shares her innocence despite her troubled childhood with her reading audience. Her biographical depiction of her memories as early as five years old describe life with her mum and older sister.
Her absentee father creates the opportunity for much teasing by her schoolmates. She is saved from being sexually exploited by him because her older sister speaks up about her own experiences. While her neglectful mum eats well, her young daughters dine on watered down soup. Considered underweight and weak, she is chosen to attend an open air school just outside of Melbourne, Australia where she flourishes. Given the opportunity to receive proper nutrition, as well as a combination of rest and exposure to outside activities, she discovers the creative side of her personality and the ability to survive her circumstances.
Author/Artist Ryn Shell flourishes to this day. The special program, Hope for Weaklings helped turn her life around. As a result, Author Ryn Shell continues to be an inspiration to others by sharing her talents and giving them renewed hope as well.

I'm Not Perfect and It's Okay: Thirteen Steps to a Happier Self
That said, it could have used just a tad more polishing. I felt as though some of the transitions were a little rocky. Still, an excellent short read that will really make you think and give you perspective.
