One of these friends has been Dr. Michelle Bengston. I had the opportunity to review her first book, Hope Prevails, which you can read about here. Michelle is a neuropsychologist who had treated patients for years. Yet only in the midst of her own battle did she discover the missing component in treatment.
Being a woman who usually has a Bible Study workbook going, when asked to be a part of this launch team, I was grateful to be included. Hope Prevails Bible Study is a wonderful study for anyone who struggles with depression or has a loved one who struggles. This means it is pretty much for us all.
The study brings practical application which will encourage any reader. It is not a cure for depression as medication may be needed and one should always follow the recommendations made by their doctor.
But we need to always remember there is a spiritual component of our lives that must be addressed. This study does just that - focuses on our spiritual mindset.
Each chapter of this study will guide you in reading Scriptures and responding to questions. There are key thoughts and directives to help maintain a hope filled mindset throughout the day. Dr. Bengston has included a leader's guide making this book a wonderful resource for a group Bible Study.
The book is a gentle journey making one realize depression is common and we are not alone in this battle. There are chemical genetic, experiential, and spiritual contributors to this struggle. With the help of professionals and Scriptures, one can fight back from this journey and discover the joy and peace God intends.
This is an excellent Bible Study and resource for personal use for those who struggle with depression or have a loved one who struggles.
** I received an advanced reading copy of this book for the purpose of this review in exchange for my honest opinion. It was a privilege to read this book and do so.
I have battled anxiety and depression for as long as I can remember, panic attacks, anger, and self pity- I have a book shelf full of self help books , but NOT one addresses the REAL ISSUES like Michelle does, and I believe it is because she has truly lived it and come thru it- I believe God allowed it so she could help all of us. She has been in the trenches of this debilitating battle, so she can and does write the truth from her perspective and it is LIFE CHANGING to say the least. This book goes where no others have and that is to the root of depression and what causes it - the spiritual aspect of Satan's lies, and how to over come the thief when he comes to steal, Kill and destroy our lives...
There is SO much FREEDOM in this book and I highly recommend it even if you do not battle depression, but know some one who does-
I am seriously praying of doing a small group using this Bible study as it has made such an impact on my life and I believe it will do the same for you as well
A year later, she is releasing a companion Bible study blending her insights with practical advice and a proven method to fight depression and find hope and healing.
If you are seeking tangible help for depression, the small investment in her book and Bible study will be well worth the money spent. It won’t be easy. Dr. Bengtson’s book and Bible study will ask you to do hard but necessary tasks. You will have to face your fears, your past and yourself. You will have to work hard, but it will be worth it. She is proof that her method works. From Scripture memorization to prayer, you will find peace and hope in God’s Word.
You will not find a better way to deal with the underlying causes of depression if you just manage symptoms. There is hope for a true release from the grip of depression. If you or someone you know is depressed, buy these books. if it is you, focus on getting better with Dr. Bengtson’s help. If it is someone you know, work through the Bible study together, encourage them and help them find the hope that prevails. It will be well-worth it, don’t you think?
