This is the perfect place to begin to learn about Kachina dolls. Whether you are a novice or an experienced collector, this guide will be of great help. The detailed descriptions and information are a must for any collector. For those planning to buy a kachina doll, I highly recommend THE NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN ARTIST DIRECTORY. It will enable you to find the kachina carver you are looking for. When you find a kachina you like in one of the Jacka or other fine Southwest Indian art books, check the name and then find it in the directory - along with mailing address and phone # ! Call the artist directly, make an appointment, take along your COMPLETE GUIDE TO COLLECTING KACHINA DOLLS and have a great time!

I bought two of these books, one for me and one for a friend. It is quite thorough, well written, and has great colorful photos of traditional Kachinas. Its focus is on Hopi but also touches on Zuni and Navajo. This book is very interesting and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to study Kachinas.

This book is extremely helpful in identifying a wide range of Pueblo Indian kachinas and their reproduction as wood dolls, carved primarily by Hopi Indians in Arizona. It contains a helpful introduction to the history of Kachinas, and then proceeds to group them in many different categories with beautiful color photographs of the carved dolls in each grouping. Written descriptive paragraphs are included for each kachina illustrated.
This is a must book for anyone who collects kachina doll carvings or who wants to learn more about this fascinating and very important part of Pueblo Indian sprituality.

Good well written and provides a great deal of information. I have read the book twice and still use it as a guide. The book provided pictures of a large number of kichinas and which is very helpful. Some might consider it a basic beginner book. And if it is it, all I can say, as a beginner, it told more than several books I had read on google combined. I think this book is well worth the money and will help me learn a lot about a field of collecting I knew little about.

After acquiring a collection of nine old kachina dolls (dating from the 1950s to the 1970s)I needed to be able to identify which spirit dancer each was meant to depict. This book was one of two that I bought to help me identify even the unusual ones I had bought, as well as learn about their background and get an idea of what the more modern Kachina Dolls look like...great photos!

After my aunt died, I received her Kachina collection that I had ooh and aahed over for years. I had just a rudimentary understanding of them, and therefore needed to bone up. It's a good thing I did, since she started her collection in the 1940's and many of them are authentic antiques that I need to insure and keep safe [I still secretly smile remembering one of my cousin's snide, "Oh, you got the little dolls" remark]. This book also teaches the role and identity each one plays in their ceremonies. The book is truly complete in it's coverage, it's easy to read, understand, and to keep as a reference!!

I bought it for a friend and she has been through brain surgery a few years ago, and was drawn to a Hopi Kachina collection that was placed in the facility where she lives. Every day she would go down to the case and look at the dolls and try to figure out how they were made and all the colours. When I gave her the books, she was so excited and told me how much she wanted them. She was so moved that she just cried.

Lots of beautifully coloured pictures which she loves.

Very good but dated book covering the Hopi Katsinas as they relate to the prized kachina dolls of decades ago. It is interesting to see familiar family names of carvers who produce today's works of Hopi art and spirit. The photos of earlier dolls put today's work in perspective. Very interesting for collectors, but be advised; it is not a novel.
