Pros:
-Most of the oil drains inside the container, so there is less likelihood of splashing around and spilling if you need to reposition it once the flow starts lightening.
-It functions both as a catch basin and as a temporary spent oil storage container.
Cons:
-The design could be really improved by one minor thing, and I can't believe the designers didn't think of it (or chose not to do it): adding some kind of lid to protect the oily side from coming into contact with anything when it's not in use (and in storage). With the current open design, I have to use paper towels to scrape the remainder of the oil that sits on the bases of the pan into the drainage hole, and then I have to wipe down that side really well so that oil doesn't drip if I stand it up on it's side (or if something accidentally comes into contact with it).
Overall, it works exactly how it was designed, but that design could really use some improvement. The catch basin could have a steeper slope to encourage more oil to drain into the hole without assistance, it could use a cover to protect the oily side of the pan/prevent oil drips. And, if the bottom had a little bit of a lip so that when the container is standing upright, the excess doesn't slowly drip down to the ground (the reason why you need to wipe it down unless you store it laying down. It's not a bad product, and I guess for $10 I can't expect an ingenious design, but with some minor changes, this really could have been a 5 star product. I see people complaining about it not taking in the oil fast enough and "glugging". They may have overlooked the small air vent hole. I didn't open it for a first few seconds and air escaping the drain hole was causing oil to splatter a bit.
I see people complaining about it leaking through the plug holes over time. They need to understand that these containers are meant to catch the oil and you are suppose to transfer the oil into a proper container immediately afterwards. Wipe the drain pan down before putting it upright obviously. You do not use it for storing oil. You do not use it for transporting oil. Take the new oil container you just emptied and reuse it for storage/transportation. Transfer the left over new oil to a smaller container if you feel the need to.
I see complaints about it splashing and the pan not being large enough to catch the splash. If it is splashing because your truck is too high, maybe elevate the container so the oil doesn't drop so far and cause a splash.
I see other complaints about it being too thin. My first thought when I was moving the oil pan from under the car was that I shouldn't be pulling it on top of the rough pavement. Doing that again and again will eventually cause a hole in the container. Flatten an old box and place it underneath.
The final complaint I can remember reading is about it leaking at the seams. Now that could be a real problem. Now that I think about it, I MAY have experienced it but I can't be certain. When I removed the oil filter, a large amount of oil just plopped out and it may have been the cause of the small bit of oil I found outside of the pan OR it could have been a seam leak. I'm not sure.
An improvement on this design would be to make it so the drain opening on the side would be elevated to the point where opening the container while in use wouldn't allow any oil to escape. It can still point to the side but it has to be raised so it is above the drain hole in the pan. And obviously, thicker plastic and even thicker leak free seams can't hurt.
1.The pan is too shallow, which means the pouring oil easily sprinkling out, no matter how you position the pan you will get oil spilled on the floor
2.The plug in the pan is not fitted well and barely held in place when closed. Need to put a rag around to tight it.
3. I would not risk to use full 16 q capacity, after 2 oil changes (11q) it is almost full, so it can hold maybe 12 at its best.
4. It is bulky and heavy. It is hard to work in the narrow space under the car with this thing under the engine. Maybe for a truck, it is okay, but torture to service a small passenger car.
