5.0 out of 5 stars The Unintended Consequence of a Promise Meant to Protect
By JMH on July 7, 2020
Horatia’s Secret is a gripping story of how prejudice and societal attitudes about women affected and truly haunted a most giving and kind woman. At the time Lady Hamilton lived there was no divorce in England. A woman who had been born in lowly circumstances and truly found love in a relationship with a man not her husband was socially ruined (men, of course, suffered no social taint). Emma, Lady Hamilton was one of the great figures of her age: it is no secret that her intervention on Nelson’s behalf with Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples and the Two Sicilies, led to Nelson being able to win the Battle of the Nile, giving Britain control of the Mediterranean.

A man who had so helped Britain as had Emma would have become a national hero. Emma was scorned, and her wish to protect her daughter Horatia is a gripping tale. Lily Style’s knowledge of the history and sensitivity to what Horatia suffered is well conveyed by her novel.

For those who do not know the story of Lady Hamilton in the court of Naples, please watch the 1928 film The Divine Lady starring Corinne Griffith. It is brilliant.
