I make pasta salad, soups ,add it to spaghetti sauce , omelettes and have even made sandwiches. Does it taste like a fresh Christmas ham? Of course not. Only a fool expects that. But it's very good canned ham. It's chunks, not a solid brick. But the description is clear about that. Don't pay more than about a dollar fifty a can though. Otherwise you might as well get it at Walmart. Some sellers are selling it for less than a dollar a can. I save the ham juice off it into a container in the freezer. I just add to it whenever I open a can. When I make soup I use that as part of the stock with some ham bouillon as well as whatever ham broth was in the cans of ham I'm adding. (Same goes for canned chicken) Waste not want not.

This Hormel Ham is a mix of ground ham and ham chunks. There is a little bit of gelled liquid in the can but not much, the can is mostly meat, unlike most of the canned chicken I have had recently (almost half broth.) I like the smoky flavor, it is great in an omelet or in mac and cheese. Yes you can eat it cold in a pinch too. Great to have on hand in case of emergency or lockdown.

As a apocalypse prepper, I'm always looking for a stable, decent canned meat. This stuff knocked my socks off. When you open the can it looks like congealed pink paste but it smells like smoked ham. It tastes like smoked ham. It has the consistency of pre-chewed smoked ham, not pulverized. I ate it right out of the can with a fork to really get a sense of it and hands down this is better than anything you'll find in any MRE ever made. Is it a fresh ham? No. This is only the crème de la crème of canned meat, not uncanned, fresh meat.

So , was a bit worried because of some of the reviews saying ham was too salty , looked spoiled , all the cans were damaged , etc. Well , I was pleasantly surprised because the stuff tastes great , looks & smells great , and even tho I had a total of two cans out of 24 , in a double order , with very minor dents , I'm satisfied ! I used the barely dented cans right off , & no problems at all . I like Spam ok , but this ham tastes better , and the price was very good .

I buy these by the dozen, so they are shipped in original packing trays, and shelve them for future consumption (and date rotation). Have been eating this product for 20 years, never had a bad experience.

Treat it as you would tuna: Super for a quickie ham salad, makes a great ham patty, great with scrambled eggs, mix with ground beef or a tasty meatloaf. Keep it in moderate temperatures and these - despite the conservative dating - will last years and years.
