Baumann's technical skills are undeniable, but it is his musicality that will bring you back to this recording over and over. The two Haydn concertos are well known and these recordings are some of the best around. The Rosetti/Michael Haydn is OK and well played, but ultimately second rate music. The real gem here is the Pokorny Concerto. It has some beautiful moments that you have to listen to over and over.

A wonderful album.

Listening to this disc again (which I''ve had for years) on my new CD player, I was bowled over at the sound of Baumann's horn. So lush, rich, ravenous, tuneful, smooth. The recording is immediate (if a touch dry) with a nice captured acoustic space. Thematically, musically and in terms of compositional skills, Haydn's writing for the horn is so far ahead of his junior Mozart that what we have here are three underrepresented masterpiece pieces for the horn. The Pokornoy is chock full of delightful rhythms. ASMF play with their customary skill and musicality. Iona Brown's time with the ASMF (God rest her soul) was fully satisfactory in quality and output. Nothing here to suggest otherwise, firm recommendation.

Baumann suffered a stroke in 1993 but continues to tour and play French horn in his magnificent manner. Consider us lucky we have medical technology to give us more of Herr Baumann.

Yep,, Herman is a wonderful player. This is in German style with more vibrato than most Americans play. Beautiful.
We got to know him and he is a remarkable man.
