this was exactly the type of gun safe i was looking for (they make two newer models, but they are smaller and i needed to put a glock 17l with a mag extension in it), yet there were so many terrible reviews here it gave me pause for weeks. i turned to online reviews and they were better, but not very complete and i suspect they got a free product for writing a page or so.
my experience was not negative and it makes me wonder how many people simply threw away the instructions and tried to wing it. i suspect very many of them did. the alternative is that dozens of people got defective units and i find that hard to believe. and some reviewers said that hornady support was either unhelpful or non-existent. before i ordered, i called hornady to make sure my 17l would fit in this safe and i got an english-speaking american human who knew firearms forwards and backwards in less than two minutes. try that with microsoft or any of hundreds of other firms.
when it arrived i followed every instruction to the letter and the only thing i missed in the beginning was that you had to hit /enter/ to arm it or ready it for instructions _if_ you were on battery power and indeed i had put batteries in first and was going to hook up the a/c adapter later. but even then i discovered the trick on my own after a couple of failed tries. i also had some trouble getting the plastic top plate back in place the first try, but later tries it settled right in. and i'm a mechanical disaster--if i could set this thing up in less than 20 minutes, nearly anyone could.
i pushed the top button and programmed the key pad and then pushed the 2nd button and programmed a wrist band. but when i went to arm the keychain fob i hit the 2nd button again instead of the 3rd one and it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what i had done wrong. bottom line is that it went mostly very smoothly with only the most minor of issues which could have been avoided if i'd been going slower and reading more thoroughly.
after setting it up, it met all my expectations. just brushing my wrist over the sensor raised the lid very quickly. you can nearly reach towards where the pistol will pop up and by the time you've passed the sensor the lid will raise and you can simply continue into the box to withdraw your weapon. it is loud and clangy though, so if you need to do it in stealth mode as to not alert an intruder, you could hold the lid and use the keypad instead, letting the lid raise slowly.
i do have one complaint and that is there's no way to dim or turn off the red led and i'll have to see tonight when i go to bed how much light that puts out. i might have to put some opaque tape over it so i can still see it, but it doesn't glow so brightly.
in short, very pleased with this purchase and it fits my needs to be able to access a large gun quickly while keeping it secure. due to the size of the glock, i can't put a spare mag or a flashlight in there, but if i used one of my more compact pistols i think i could fit both in there with it.
