This novel is its own spin-off series that takes place before all of the other Marvelous World books and it doesn't matter if you haven't read them. I suppose this will be a great introduction to the entire Marvelous World Universe. However, if you have read the other books you will get a kick out of how you'll find out things about events that were mentioned in other Marvelous World volumes. I must say that this diary format is totally new found that I had to adjust to this style of writing; I am not sure if other Marvelous World fans will experience the same thing.
Horribly Marvelous is way more mature than the other previous Marvelous World books. I was NOT expecting that and it deals with issues that are typical to teens along with murder. This book begins with talk of how two of Cyndi’s classmates were murdered under impossible circumstances and Cyndi is on a quest to find out exactly what happened. The story turns out to be something way bigger than a murder mystery and is about crossing dimensions and galaxies in a highly entertaining way.
This book is really all about Cyndi and she is living in a world of her own. If you don’t like her I'm not sure if you'll like this book but if you do she will hold your interest through everything. She has very strict rules about how she lives her life and some of them are hilarious. It's fun to see how she sticks to those rules as a means to battle the super powerful freaks who killed her classmates. All of that is what brings everything together and sets this series apart from other YA fantasy titles.
This is no replacement for Marvelous World 3, but I seriously enjoyed reading about Cyndi and finding out that she is way more interesting than she seemed to be in the other Marvelous World books. Still, no matter how much I like this book and Marvelous World, the author needs to respect his readers and release books more frequently. Regardless, I find myself waiting for part two of Horribly Marvelous and Marvelous World 3!!!
So to all of the parents who have younger children who have read Marvelous World, I suggest you read it first and the decide if its appropriate for your child.
