Editorial Reviews

"As an in-depth look into what it takes to produce great horror films, we can think of no better resource on the market!" - Dave Jeffery & James Hart (Award winning film makers from Venomous Little Man Productions) "Horror 201: The Silver Scream will be seen as a landmark, the ultimate practical guide to horror filmmaking that will hopefully create and arm an entire generation of horror screenwriters and aspiring directors." - Aaron Sterns "Following the big success of Bram Stoker Award nominated HORROR 101: THE WAY FORWARD, Crystal Lake Publishing is back again with HORROR 201: THE SILVER SCREAM, making the transition from fiction to film. As with the former title in the series, HORROR 201: THE SILVER SCREAM is jammed packed with entertaining, interesting, and useful material for would-be horror filmmakers and insatiable movie geeks who just have to know about everything. The amazing interviews with Wes Craven, George A. Romero, and John Carpenter alone are worth the price of the book. Horror fans, whether film or fiction, need this book - and really anyone interested in movies period. Recommended!" - Aaron J. French, Editor-in-Chief of Dark Discoveries "No one teaches horror. As a student of terror, realizing just how useful it is in teaching how society works and is influenced, that is a shame. Horror 201 opens the door again, but be careful... you don't know what lurks on the other side. The truth is scary." - David C. Hayes "Horror 201: The Silver Scream is a brilliant glimpse into the horror and movie making industry. This book will point the way, light the path and ignite the fires inside you and get you putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard." - Linzi Osburn

Horror 201 is a terrific sequel to Crystal Lake Publishing’s Horror 101, which focused on the book end of the business. This time, Mynhardt offers up some useful and entertaining advice when it comes to horror in the film industry. Included are sections on industry trends, personal accounts from screenwriters, novelizations of movies, and interviews with industry greats such as George Romero. Also, the tribute to the late Wes Craven at the end was quite touching. Instead of a how-to book for the film industry, Horror 201 offers up personal antidotes and tips that worked for each individual, so this isn’t a book for someone looking for a job in the industry, but for someone curious how the artists approach horror as a genre. A good read, especially the interviews, for anyone interested in process of creating horror movies.

Horror 201: The Silver Scream by numerous writers who cover the horror movie realm pretty convincingly, edited by Joe Mynhardt and Emma Audsley, was received by this writer direct from the publisher in exchange for reasons not related to this review. The book was not as I expected, as Horror 101 was very in depth on the writing process, Horror 201 was more a overview of the movie making process. This generalization on my part may be because I am somewhat involved with this process so those who are not may be more enthralled. I am NOT saying this was a bad book in any way shape or form. The story authors and interviewees alone make it worth the paltry sum a person pays for it. If you, or someone you know is interested in the horror movie business or, pulled direct from the book description: are looking to delve into screenplay writing, want to write their first screenplay, like to follow the careers of their favorite directors, are planning on infiltrating a different field in horror writing, are looking to pay more bills with their art, are trying to establish a name brand, are looking to get published, are looking for motivation and/or inspiration or are seeking contacts in the film industry, this is a book to buy.

“At the end of the day, screenwriting is an instrumental part of making a movie, but make no mistake, it’s still very much a discipline of writing.”-Stephen Johnson
Have you ever wanted to make a movie, ever wonder how it’s done? Perhaps, you already have a film or two under your belt. Whatever your situation may be this is a book worth looking into! What about you writers? Ever dream of seeing your work on the big screen? You too can find invaluable tips on what works and what doesn’t when it comes to adapting a story to a screenplay.
As a person who has no aspirations for filmmaking (only film watching, LOL), I still found this a fascinating read. Interwoven between how-tos and what-not-to-dos, you will find amusing anecdotes, insider info, and WOW moments of “I didn’t know that’s how it’s done.”
When you have the likes of Wes Craven, Ed Naha, George Romero, Patrick Lussier, and all the rest of these greats giving advice, how could you not want to read what they have to say? Thoroughly entertaining and oh so informative, this is a book that anyone interested movies will surely want to read! Whether you like Horror or not, the tips found here can be adapted to any genre. Buy it, you’ll like it!
