This book finally sheds light on the latest mystery of designing a worming program around the resistance issue. And debunks the latest catch-all: "get a fecal egg count"! You can not trust a manufacturers recommendations for products that have been totally proven to be ineffectual against the most dangerous of equine parasites. Dr. Nyland clears the air and brings a sane approach to the problem. I've made a few changes to my strategy using her recommendations and have been very pleased with the result. I do take issue with one statement regarding Pin Worms. Dr. Nyland states they are not much of an issue, and I guess if the appearance of your horse is not your paramount concern, that is true. But my horse had a nasty infestation of pin worms which would not respond to standard forms of control. He was miserable, and had scratched his buttocks raw from the intense itching these worms cause. A fecal egg count did not show a problem (contrary to Dr. Nyland assertion that Pin Worm eggs will show up in a fecal) and we fussed for way too long until I had hard evidence that is was indeed a pin worm problem. We've managed to get the issue under control but I was hoping the book would give me much more information regarding this particular parasite. Overall an easy read, and quite extensively footnoted (almost making the text hard to read!). Well written and appears well researched.

This book provides the essential information on horse worming for both the experienced and the not-so-experienced horse owner.

Horse worming products are expensive and there are many brands around, all making strong claims to work very effectively. But it's the information on encysted stages of worms and in particular, the time bomb of encysted cyathostomes and the chemicals proven to remove them that makes this book so valuable. By following the advice and treatment strategies outlined in this book, I now know that I'm treating my horses effectively for their long term health. I'm not wasting money rotating products that do not manage this particular parasite and am thus getting the maximum benefits -- horse health-wise and money-wise.

Dr. Nyland provides all this information in an easily read style and includes a comprehensive bibliography to the scientific papers if you want to follow these up.

And, as a bonus, she's from DownUnder!!

"If there is only ever one horse related book you ever buy or read, make sure it
is Horse and Donkey Worms and Worming by Dr. Ann Nyland.

I cannot believe my ignorance of the RIGHT way to approach worming horses. Ann
lays it out simply and easily.

Forget what you ever thought you knew about rotational worming and read this
book!!!

I was seriously shocked by how wrong I had it all and I consider myself
reasonabley well educated and informed on horse health issues.

Learning about the terrible dangers of encysted small strongyles in otherwise
healthy looking horses was quite frightening.

Cheers,

Jen Green - Flying Circus Endurance Stables - Australia
