I've spent most of my life as a university professor, with degrees in physics (Harvard), geophysics and atmospheric science (University of Alaska Fairbanks.) I've been writing non-fiction for years, not only professional papers, but a good deal of popular science as well. I wrote the Alaska Science Forum for a while--a column distributed to newspapers, radio stations and magazines throughout Alaska and now available on the Web. (Google it.) When I retired I began writing fiction, mostly science fiction. I've always been interested in how planets work and how societies work with them, and I've had fun designing planets and their societies. I have to admit I've ignored some physics--plotting becomes just about impossible without simultaneity, which relativity says does not exist on an interstellar scale. So I've set up a universe in which telepathy and teleportation are instantaneous, though they do have to follow the laws of conservation of energy and momentum. Makes for some interesting consequences.

Note that Homecoming, although my first published book, is only the first of five I've written. The sequel, Tourist Trap, is set on a planet terraformed from earth during the Pleistocene. Wouldn't you like to be an ecotourist among mammoths, saber-tooth cats and longhorned bison? But it might not be as much fun if your older brother were trying to kill you!

Horse Power presents a prequel story for Ms. Bowling's novels and does a decent job of establishing the setting and premise of her series. The story and series set themselves apart by giving a unique perspective on a science fiction universe I have not seen anywhere else: little emphasis on technology and space but overflowing with plot and character development from the point of view of colonists' on a world whose technological level is behind that of its parent society. Despite its short length, reading the story gave me a good working knowledge of the characters and their struggles. I now feel like I'm ready to delve into her other books: Homecoming and Tourist Trap.

Great sci fi short!

A terraformed planet, hard working immigrant farmer-landowners scrabbling to make their way, an economic disaster wrought by the monopolistic "Company", and a psychic, un-aging agent who teleports from another world... what could go wrong???

I really enjoyed this read. It is short, though not so short as to be unsatisfying, and it is thoughtfully written and masterfully edited. The plot is simple but intriguing, and the characters are very believable. Although the story is set in the far future (or past, depending upon which way you sling your spacetime), the major conflict's ultimate solution might take you back a couple hundred years. Thanks to the author for a lovely hour away from Earth!

Pioneers out among the stars...

Sue Ann Bowling did a great job re-imagining what pioneers might go through in the not too, too distant future. These pioneers aren't conquering some new-old-west in a time twist. They're pioneering out among the stars.

Bowling has an impressive science background (author bio on Amazon), and it occasionally surfaces in her stories. They aren't romance books, but they aren't heavy into scifo technology, either. They are more a blend of biology and methodical practicality amongst humans figuring out what to do next to survive, or to better their living situation.

This is a very short and enjoyable read. Five stars.

This is a science fantasy long short story or short novella and it's nicely written, although a case could be made that there's a bit too much exposition (in dialogue) in comparison to action. There's some repetition, too, but not a lot. No strong character development, just an interesting plotline. Knocking off a star here for the overworked "greedy corporation" trope; that took the short story from "new and different" to "something I've seen too many times" in my thoughts. Otherwise, I enjoyed the read.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Horse Power. Sci-fi isn't my preferred genre, but this book is an exception. I loved it and read it through in a single setting. The book features a great cold start, is well written, enjoyable characters, and reminds me a great deal of the television cult hit, Firefly.

Give it a read, you won't be disappointed.

Great Short

With the punch of a wonderful start and a quick rise to a pace that surprises you with how quickly it ends, 'Horse Power' fills in the basic need to know more. It gives enough about the characters and the world they operate in to leave you wanting more and searching for the main books in her series. Sue Ann Bowling is an excellent author and worthy of praise.

This is a short book of around 10-12,000 words, which I think makes it a novella, that provides background in Sue Ann Bowling's Homecoming series. A Preamble places it in context, and having read neither of the books it follows, I welcomed this. However I found I slotted straightaway into the world Ms Bowling has built and I appreciate the way some societal developments are best played out in back stories of their own.

Timi and Amber are settlers on the planet Horizon, but the catch appears to be that the colonising company aims to ensure they never pay off the cost of their settlement - they become debt slaves. A visit from Roi, an old friend with certain extra powers, derived in part from being a non-human, comes at an opportune moment. He's actually on an assignment, but he is able to mix business with pleasure and solve his business problem by helping Timi and Amber.

This is an agricultural world where using low energy methods of dealing with everyday problems is essential. Day to day worries of a colonising farming community can be understood by the least farming-savvy reader. The characters are likeable and well-drawn, and the countryside vividly imagined. It's a clean sci-fi book, suitable for teens upwards.

This is a lovely tale that makes me want to go and read the series, starting with Homecoming and then Tourist Trap . The next book, Rescue Operation, will post-date Horse Power.
