This is the second book I've read from Bev Pettersen, and I have to say that they are one of the most well rounded books I've found in this genre. Her characters are so awesome and realistic. There are enough character flaws to make them believeable without hating them, and their reactions are realistic. I do like how she portrays her male characters. They're real men, stoic and tough, but who do have a sensitive side that's incredibly sexy. I also find that I can relate to her female characters in an instant, which is the true grabber for me. Usually, when you find characters this good, the plot leave you less than satisfied, but Bev didn't skimp on that either. Her plots are incredible and leave you guessing, wanting more. I couldn't put her books down and I can't wait to buy her other books and read more! Definitely one of my new favorite authors!!

I read Jockeys & Jewels as my first novel by Bev Petersen, and I was hooked. After such a great read, I decided to see what else she had to offer, and fell upon Horses & Heroin. It was an EXCELLENT read and I could hardly put the book down. I can't remember the last time I spent hours just sitting and reading a book. Yet, I could hardly wait to finish this one - and then when I was finished - I wished I wasn't... I wanted to keep reading! A real page turner. It was just that good. LOVED IT!

Megan's brother has disappeared from a California jockey school with no trace. The school blames heroin and insists that he was a dealer and escaped when they became wise to him. Megan doesn't believe the story, and enrolls at the school to get answers. With a different last name than her brother, no one knows she is his sister as she subtly snoops around for the truth. Scott is a private investigator on leave to recover from a gunshot wound. When he and Megan become involved, Megan has to decide who to trust, since Scott is best friends with the school's director--whom she doesn't trust at all. Great suspense, mystery, danger, friendships, and character growth.

I'm all done with the book. Now I have to wait for the next one. I hate that!

I really am so happy that I stumbled onto Bev Pettersen's books. Really glad I took a chance on her. I enjoy her books, they're a good read and I try to read as slowly as I can so I can drag it out but her books are hard to put down so I end up plowing through them.

I like her characters, they always seem so real, so down to earth, so believable. She is on auto buy!

Enjoyable book with some mystery and suspense with romance. There is plenty of steam too, just not over the top. It is very similar to the style if Bev's previous books, tied into the racetrack and law enforcement. I enjoyed it.

This book was fantastic. At first, I didn't think I would like this book as much as Bev's other books but I was wrong. In many ways, it ended up being my favorite. Couldn't put it down! Highly recommend it!

I almost passed on this book because of the title. Yes, I'm against hard drug use, but that's not the reason why. Frankly, it's just a stupid title when another could have worked better. That said, I'm glad I read the book's description because that's what sold me to click the BUY button.

This is my first novel by Bev Petterson and I'd be interested in reading others. I like horses. I like horse racing. Put the two together and she wrote an outstanding, fresh story. There were slow sections of the story where I admit to quickly skimming over to get back into the action. Especially the part authors call "The Sagging Middle".

The heroine Megan enrolls in jockey school (I didn't know there were such things) to investigate the disappearance of her brother. Enter the hero, Scott. He's a P.I. who'd been grazed by a bullet to the head during his last job and he needs to recuperate away from the hustle of his busy P.I. office. Of course, any man in his right mind who'd recently been shot in the head would naturally choose to hide-out at jockey school that just so happens to be owned by his buddy. (who just so happens to need a drug addict instructor)

Throw in the Mexican drug cartel, a few bad jockeys, a few goofy sidekicks, and this turned out to be quite an enjoyable read! I was never quite sure "whodunit" until the author divested the truth. Good job on the part of Bev Petterson and her superb writing skills.

Mystery, suspense, sexy characters as well as despicable ones, and plenty of Thoroughbred racehorse track action to keep you standing in your stirrups until the very end.
