I was having a problem getting these adapters to make a firm connection. Without it, they are useless. And yes, I did snap them firmly into place. Believe me. Judging by many other reviews, I was not alone. And I'll bet the others with this problem had snapped their adapter firmly into place, too. Believe them.
I considered just throwing mine away and getting a different product, but that seemed like a waste. So I looked at the problem and came up with the following solution, conveyed in the form of instructions. There are just three easy steps and all that's required is a small screwdriver:
1) Look inside the hollow end of the adapter. You should see a short, copper colored clip extending upwards from the bottom of the adapter, close to the wall. The top of the clip, closest to you, is flexible and bendable.
2) Insert a small, flat head screwdriver (or whatever else is appropriate and handy) into the hollow end of the adapter, so that the screwdriver is between the clip and the wall.
3) Bend the clip away from the wall toward the middle of the hollow. Not too far or you may block the path or damage the clip, but far enough so that the clip makes good contact when you insert your cord into the adapter. It took me two tries to get it right. If you're worried about damaging the clip, give it just a little bend and then reinsert your cord and see if there's any improvement. Repeat until it's right.
Some observations-
-Even though there was still some slop in the properly snapped connection between my cord and one of the adapters, with the clip bent to the proper position, the static, drop-outs and sudden bursts of noise are gone. And not a moment too soon. Before I fixed my adapters, I was on the verge of developing a panic disorder from the sudden, unpredictable and deafening noises that were jumping out from my amplifier, sometimes with only the slightest movement of my guitar.
-I think it goes without saying that no product should need fixing right out of the box. But apparently it was just a bad batch that some of us had the misfortune to receive. Believe us. I've bought other products from Hosa and been very satisfied. I'm sure I'll buy more.
-In spite of the above problem, I think this is a really nice adapter. Otherwise, I might have thrown it away the moment it malfunctioned. It's built with good materials that should last a long time. Some of the other adapters seem to have an inordinate amount of plastic. This Hosa has a stylish design and the finger-friendly dimpled sleeve is a nice touch. It's easy to install, it just snaps into place...Unless, of course, it needs fixin. (see above). But most of all, it's a simple, inexpensive, even elegant solution to a common problem with straight-end cords: because they stick straight out into space, they invite bumps and beg for knocks. And when they get enough of them, equipment has to be repaired or replaced.
After replacing a guitar cord and repairing output jacks on both a guitar and an amplifier as a result of this problem, I was glad when I happened upon these. And now that they work properly, I'm even more glad. In fact, I'm so glad, I'm so glad, I'm glad, I'm glad I'm glad.
