Excellent research, well written, very readable.

The author has carefully and thoroughly researched a topic on which it is difficult to find good information. The military didn't exactly publicize this aspect of their operations, and for good reason. But, now it's history. The book is thick, and full of details, but well written and surprisingly readable. The author shows obvious admiration for the work of those who served aboard these ships, and for those who cared for the wounded service members at all stages, from the battlefields to their homeports. My late father was one of those Navy Corpsmen in WWII and Korea, and finding information has not been easy. I appreciate the author's extraordinary efforts researching this subject and sharing that research. Note: The title is "Hospital ships of World War II," but the chapters on some individual ships carry out the topic for several decades later (or as long as those ships were in service.) My father was only stationed on a hospital ship in Korea (regular Navy ships the rest of the time), and the book included good material on that ship in that era. I now have several more leads to pursue. Thank you, Mr. Massman.

You NEED this book!

This book is one of those rare "must-haves" for any maritime historian, military historian or anyone with more than a casual interest in the topic. Very well researched, almost error free, thorough and readable. Expect to learn much and ponder more about these white mercy ships of that terrible war.

Gratifying History

Learning the history of these very heroic ships and their dedicated staff was quite an education. I was overwhelmed with excitement when I found the chapter on the USS Refuge as my father was Commander of this hospital ship and crew. Thank you MR. Massman for sharing your knowledge of this countries WW11 Hospital Ships and serviceman. It was truly gratifying for me to read about my Dad and I burst with proudness.Only wish I knew more.

Great WWII History Book

Format: Hardcover

Massman had done produced an excellent book on a topic that generated few titles to date. This book is decently illustrated and is very readable. While pricey, it is well printed and bound. There is much information on the hospital ships themselves, and much relavent personal interest material included. I enjoyed this book, and would gladly recommend it to others with interest in this genre.
