This is the book that I wish I had written! James Gritter, also the author of adoption classic, The Spirit of Open Adoption, revitalizes a timeless concept and applies it to the adventure of adoption: hospitality. He calls on all who are involved in the adoptive process - adoptive parents, birthparents, adoptive children and adoption professionals - to embrace the privilege, responsibility and opportunity inherent in adoption. He argues convincingly that learning the art of courageous hospitality can infuse this journey with beauty in a way that is a gift to all involved. Through the lens of hospitality he tackles tough topics such as when a woman changes her mind and chooses to parent, the often heart wrenching transition of the child from birth to adoptive parents, and navigating an open adoption when the relationship between the birth and adoptive parents is not an easy or natural one. Not a "how-to" book, but more a book to help us re-imagine adoptive relationships in a more respectful, gracious and hospitable manner.
As both an adoptive mother and an adoption professional, I am so encouraged by this new and fresh vocabulary and vision for adoption. Thank you, Mr. Gritter!
