Even though Lola is 52, her main personality is that of someone in their 20s. I keep forgetting that she's an older woman and her mother is up there in age.
You get sucked in and invested in reading about Lola and her 7 Alters. I can't wait for book 3!
Foremost you must start with Alters in order to understand Host.
What a challenging series this had to be for Erin to write. She takes on tough topics and shines light into places most won't dare go.
In Alters "they" decided a merge was best to get Lola out of the institution she has spent the last 30-ish years living in. Now Lola is on the outside, building her life as one single personality - her own. But can she manage life on the outside as one? Or will her Alters come back?
What I still insist on calling Multiple Personality Disorder (yes I disagree with the change in the DSM) is life changing, life destroying, and can tear families apart. It's not the one with the disorder that always suffers the most. So is this a touchy topic, damn right it is. Was Erin able to approach this subject in a delicate and sensitive manner, hell yes she was. Even the hilarious parts were done spectacular.
Was this well though out with perfect timing? You bet! The story flows well. The characters are extremely relatable and realistic. Do I recommend this series. Absolutely! Will Ms. Lee always be a 1-click author for me HELL YEAH!!!!
So why a 4 star review? Well really I'd love to be able to give it a 4.5 star but we can't do that here. I still found some parts to be a bit confusing, with the need to reread some places to figure out who was doing the actual thinking or talking.
Being knowledgeable on this topic I believe Erin, as always, did a splendid job with a sensitive subject. So it's purely personal opinion. I know for a fact there is no way in the world I could do a better job, nor would I ever even attempt it. I just have trouble separating "real life - from fiction" with this series only! So again! Brilliant job , by an amazing author.
