About the Author

EMILY FRAGOS is an award-winning poet who teaches creative writing at NYU and Columbia University. Her poems have appeared in Poetry, The New Yorker, The American Poetry Review, Best American Poetry, and The Paris Review. She is the author of a collection of poetry, Little Savage and editor of the anthologies The Great Cat, The Dance, and Music’s Spell. She lives in New York City.

Fragos is a visionary

Emily Fragos is nothing short of a visionary. "Hostage" is a stunning second collection and another masterpiece of verse. The poems are extraordinary--haunted and haunting--and remain with the reader long after he or she closes the book. The voice in these memorable poems is omniscient and powerful and provides us the unique privilege to see the world in ways we have never done so before. Fragos brings us on an unlikely journey to witness masterpieces of dance, medieval squares, the last circus on earth, an ice cream parlor, outsider artists, strange and complex cityscapes, and countless other realms. We are with her every step of the way, gaining profound insights about experiences we thought we already knew. These are poems of tremendous heart and heartbreak. These are poems that reach the ultimate goal of poetry, to disconcert as well as to comfort. These are poems "whose desires [are] as boundless as the night, as boundless."

Quality All The Way

Format: Paperback

Fragos's first book "Little Savage" was arresting.

Now we have "Hostage." Not a single false gesture or mis-step;
quality all the way. Perhaps has some affinities with the hauntings
of Dickinson or Cavafy. Yet, nothing but Fragos!
