The kids actually like to do these activities. I handed out the Pop Can activity early in the year, and students who threw a fit when I asked them to write a few sentences were suddenly begging me for more time to write and filling up a whole page. The activities are quirky and hilarious without being offensive at all (in other words, middle schoolers think they're funny but they don't pander to middle school potty humor). There are a wide variety of activities to choose from that suit my educational needs. And, amazingly, my more advanced students enjoy the activities and don't get bored either.
One thing to be aware of is that this book is focused pretty solely on the parts of speech. I need activities for other grammatical elements as well and was pleased to discover that this author has also written a book called DownWrite Funny that's designed to teach grammar/ writing principles. I've purchased it and am looking forward to using it in coordination with Hot Fudge Mondays. Here's to many more successful middle school English periods, thanks to Mr. Randy Larson!
The book is organized by parts of speech. There are brief, informative lessons, and short answer and short essay questions, all of which are off-beat and fun. This is a book that can be used by a teacher as a resource or as a consumable by a class. I recommend it highly.
