About the Author

A stable manager and business owner, Kathy Roberts knows her way around both boardrooms and horse barns. This diverse expertise led her to write Hot Quit. She has previously published articles as well as two nonfiction guides, Mounted Training and Mounted Search and Rescue, and is a member of Romance Writers of America. Roberts earned her BS in animal science at California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, where she met her husband. When Roberts isn’t busy writing or working as a riding instructor, the two enjoy participating in various equine and rodeo events together, including team roping. They live in Granite Bay, California.

This book was a fun read with all sorts of details about cutting horses and competitions woven into a roller coaster love story. The author obviously knows horses and business. It's a book you pick up and want to finish the same day because it flows so well. The main characters were well defined and I believe the self absorbed qualities of the heroine were an essential part of the story.

I like this book. First time reading Kathryn Roberts and look forward to reading more.
I like modern western style stories. And of course the reluctant romance with the happy ending.

My husband has an iPad and I have a Kindle Fire, but they are both loaded from my Amazon account. We both read when we go to bed, and while he isn’t a fan of romance books he picks through the books looking for something he might enjoy. When he saw “Hot Quit” the title caught his eye, because he recognized it as a term used in the world of cutting horses, so he started to read the book. When I asked him a couple of nights later if it was any good, he surprised me when he responded with an enthusiastic YES. I had purchased the book in June of 2015 and for some reason I never got around to reading it. I had finished the book I was reading the night before, so last night I decided to read HOT QUIT—I’m a fast reader and I read until 12:30 AM to finish it. He stuck with it until he finished at 1:30—very rare for both of us!

I am deathly allergic to horses, but I love to see them in the pasture and to me there is nothing more thrilling than to watch a well trained cutting horse at work—it is mesmerizing! They are so intelligent and athletic and believe me. the rider has to have a great seat in the saddle and be very alert and yet able to relax and let the horse work. My husband raised cutting horses and while I could never go to an event in an enclosed structure, there were times when I went along to smaller, outdoor venues, where I could find a spot upwind of the horses and watch. I know enough to recognise some of the terms used in the book, I recognized some of the breeding and the mention of big time cutting events—like at Fort Worth, Texas.

I loved the book! I read some of the less than appreciative reviews for Hot Quit and thought that it was a good thing that we don’t all think the same way!

The author does a beautiful job of showing the developing relationship between Alex and Jackson. She also gives the reader an informed look into the world of corporate raiders. When Jackson proposes at the end of the novel the writing is very moving and beautiful. I give it five stars. SHEILA HUNTINGTON, author of MORNING GLORY WOMAN.

This book was okay. It kept my interest but I wasn't completely engulfed into the book. There were some weird phrases and details that didn't match. My favorite part was all the crazy sayings that Everett came up with like "I'm so hungry I could eat a folded tarp."

A nicely written romance novel that introduces one into the world of the rancher, and the "working" horses that are so important to maintaining a healthy herd of cattle. I felt that the tale was woven around the factual nature of the business of training and performing tasks with the horses in a delightful and informative way, and the story of romance and loss and persistence and work ethics was simply fun to read. Then characters are nicely developed, and the story is credible, and you always feel like your siding with the protagonist(s) and rooting for their ultimate success as they struggle with their respective personal challenges and goals.

Alexandria Payne buys, cuts up and sells businesses. She is a pro and known for her quick mind and great stratagies. She is trying to purchase a transportation company to round out a hot deal she is working on with her partner and fiance but the owner will not even take a call. She finds out he is an expert in cutting horses and gets her assistant to book her for a month of lessons from an expert, Jackson Morgan. Jackson was betrayed by a former student/lover and has been denounced by the committee from entering students or himself in cutting competiions til this year. He needs to earn his way back and needs to keep his spread so accepts Alex as a student without knowing her ulterior motives. He is impressed with her focus and determination. He believes she could be the best new student out there and is unwilling attracted to her. She is determined to successfully learn this skill and not fall for the aloof, silent Jackson. The man she is trying to impress turns out to be Jackson's former mentor who investigates her and it all hits the fan. Jackson was betrayed before and won't be the one destroyed this time. Alexandria broke the engagement with her partner who in turn undermines her with Jackson. An enjoyable read.

This romance novel is pretty much what I expected and what you probably expect from this sort of book. It's predictable, the plot is a little far-fetched, the hero is rugged but emotionally vulnerable. ;-) I like reading this kind of book as a "palate cleanser" between books that require a little more attention and thought from the reader. I have read Kathryn Roberts before and this one seems not quite as enjoyable as usual. There are some strange typos, or just flat-out errors in word choice. Does anyone edit these? If not, they should. "Game" and "gamy" have very different meanings, people! I sort of had the feeling that maybe Ms. Roberts has a stable of apprentices who work for her and perhaps this was the result of a practice run by one of the trainees. The romance scenes are even more vague and starry-eyed than usual. It's OK and for $1.99 it provides mild enjoyment at a reasonable price, but all in all, I think I would prefer a Georgette Heyer novel for my next palate cleanser.
