I really enjoyed this story. Beth is a great character. She is tough, capable, and intelligent, is able to defend herself, and definitely thinks outside the box. She is not your `usual' protagonist, as she doesn't need anyone running to her rescue. She is very good at saving herself. I just loved the character of Dr. Rassmussen. The author has given him a wonderful sense of humor. I enjoyed the conversations between the doctor and Beth--funny and sarcastic, yet realistic.
Hot Rocks is a great read. This book has a strong storyline, is suspenseful and edgy, and contains lots of twists and turns. I hope there is another Beth Bowman book in the works.
Hot Rocks is the debut mystery in a new series featuring PI, Beth Bowman. When Beth takes on a job from Maria Garcia, a woman determined to find proof that her husband is cheating and leave him once and for all, she assumes it is just another job. However, following Maria's husband, Hector Garcia, sets off an adventure that lands her at the Hotel Severn, where she is ambushed. When Beth wakes up she discovers Hector dead and the cops are pointing the finger at her.
From the sparks flying between Beth and Dr. Rasmussen, who treats Beth for her concussion, to Beth's smart-mouthed responses to the police officers in charge of the murder case, Hot Rocks was an absolute delight. Randy Rawls has successfully shown everything I love about cozy mysteries set in Florida: they are suspenseful and edgy without stepping out of the cozy mystery genre.
Sassy, smart-mouthed Beth tries to come across as tough and hard-nosed, as befitting a "skirt PI", and she completely won me over with her sense of humor and sleuthing skills.
Hot Rocks is a delightful debut mystery, and I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series.
