As the "Hot Shot" in the product's name implies, this is for spraying directly on insects, and as the name also says, it's for killing ants and roaches. My experience is that if you spray it on ants or roaches, poof, they're dead, with only a lemongrass smell left behind. I primarily use it for spraying on the large roaches known as "sewer roaches" or "tree roaches", the 2-3 inch long big ugly suckers; while it doesn't kill these big guys instantly it does immediately slow them down and, in instances where they subsequently get away, I soon find them dead whatever they ran to.

Yes, very gross, but we can't have traditional insecticide here so when these nasty things show up I have a 95%+ chance of eliminating them; without this spray my odds are more like 25%. And while the smell is indeed strong, it doesn't bother me and fades fairly quickly.

Even though we live in the suburbs, the housing developers left a lot of original growth trees. While beautiful, our wooded backyard means that we have frequent uninvited 6 or 8 legged visitors, and even quarterly pest control treatments in the crawl space can't entirely manage the situation. We use this spray throughout the house to kill and repel the bugs that persist even after treatments. It is VERY effective and I love that it uses natural active ingredients that I think will pose less risk to my cats and my toddler. We are still careful to use good sense to minimize family/pet exposure, but I feel better about using this than the regular indoor pesticides.

Strangely, for a pesticide, the scent is actually quite pleasant. It has a strong herbal smell instead of a harsh chemical smell

Pros: Unique non-insecticide scent (smells like bubble gum mixed with lemon grass)

Cons: Scares bugs away but does not kill them, Wears off quickly

We tried both the aerosol spray can and the pump spray bottle and while the smell is a lot better than other insecticides neither version is capable of killing common household roaches. If you spray it DIRECTLY ON THEM it will piss them off and make them scamper away, but they will be back tomorrow when the scent wears off. We purchased 2 aerosol cans and also the pump squirt liquid version on the off chance that it might work better than the aerosol, but they didn't work and we are sorry we wasted our time and money.

IMPORTANT NOTE: One good thing DID come of this negative experience - we were forced to keep looking and ultimately discovered a product that absolutely DOES WORK. Search on this site for a product called 'Dupont Advion Cockroach Gel Bait.' It is a professional grade insecticide that is easy to use, safe when used PROPERLY, and very, very effective. It costs more than the sprays but it really did get rid of the roaches for 3 or 4 months. But you use so little of the bait that a little goes a very long way and reapplication is quick and simple. Try it - you'll be glad you read this review!

When spraying anything indoors, like an office, maybe use some common sense and do it 4:30 or 5 PM right before everybody goes home for the evening. If you're going to spray your home around pets or kids, have the windows open.
Better yet, get everybody in the car before your going to go out for a few hours, shopping or to grab lunch, and run back in and do the treatment in the area necessary. at the same time you might turn on your exhaust fans in the kitchen or bathrooms, open some windows and doors and let it air out a bit it works fine.
Remember Lilt for perms?
My sisters would use that crap indoors, and I ran around and open the windows and turned on fans, stuff is on their head so they couldn't tell it was bad, but it be stankin....

We have ORIENTAL Cockroaches, NOT American cockroaches. These are the big, black, slower moving variety that don't invade so much as occasionally start showing up in the house when it gets warmer outside after a big rain. We can't use traditional pesticides because we have dogs and we don't want them getting pesticide on their paws and licking it off later.

The strong smell is of Lemongrass, lemongrass is NOT a roach killer but they aren't fond of the smell. This is a strong lemongrass smell that the roaches tend to avoid - so it does help with control. I'm not sure what's actually killing the roaches in this container, because it's not the lemongrass. I've poured lemongrass essential oil on roaches with no effect, so there's something else at work here. What I know is that this DOES work when sprayed directly, and the roaches avoid the scent otherwise. I recommend spraying places that your pets and children don't regularly go like outside of garage doorways, around porches, and outside of front doorways with regular roach killer, then use this stuff for anywhere INSIDE the house that you want to protect from roaches and for any direct roach kills. This stuff DOES work, and is especially good for areas you are concerned about your pets and children, but I still recommend using something harsher for the outskirts of your house where your children and pets don't go.

If you are set on going natural, use this around all of your perimeter door ways (I use a lot around the back door, front door, and garage door - especially on the wall under the door frame, or around steps), and then I use Diatomaceous Earth around the whole perimeter of the house, in the garage along the walls, under the washer/dryer, and any other creasy parts of rooms that I could get it where the dogs wouldn't get into it. Since Diatomaceous Earth is Silica, you don't want to breath it in or put it in places where your pets will be breathing it in.
