Also, the product page lists the suggested age as 5-8 years but the box says ages 5-10. My daughter is 8 and loves it and yet my wife and I have both been enjoying it too!
🔵 SETUP: Super easy my daughter setup nearly all of it on her own. The instructions make it very easy (though could depend with younger kiddos). Some of the pieces snap-in place and are kind of tough so she needed me to do it and a couple questions on the picture directions.
🔵 QUALITY: Right on point for Hot Wheels- good quality and durable!
🔵 USING/PLAY: Just as with setting it up- it's super easy to use. It actually doesn't take much "work" since it's motorized (and cars will go fast!). Mainly consists of turning the motor switch on, placing the cars onto the track, and putting them back on to the track if they crash and fall off. Otherwise, they should keep looping through the track (as long as it's turned on). There are non-motorized levers- at the entrance ramp (for adding multiple cars before releasing on the track) and also one near the entrance ramp that you can flip if you want to jump the car. You don't have to use these levers for it to work, though.
I mention about the levers because this is my daughter's first motorized set. She has other "regular" manual sets. When she connects them all (can get pretty long and spread out), each time that she wants to have a car go through a loop or turn she needs to manually reset the levers so that the next car can drive through it. When you've got a big track setup, that requires going back-and-forth a lot...but she's a kid so she'll be alright 😄…however, she is really enjoying this motorized track and wants to play with it constantly now. She's also thrilled that she can build and connect her other sets, tracks and launchers and then have the cars end on this set. Then cracks up when they crash into each other and fly off 👀
As mentioned at the beginning, you'll want batteries in order to get best use of the track.
🔵 CAR TYPES: 2 cars are included with the set. If you're familiar with Hot Wheels track sets you likely have encountered that many of the turn launchers and loops are best with certain cars- usually the cars without much height to them. And even then, some cars just don't do as well on the tracks. If you're not familiar with the cars and are getting this as a gift with additional cars--the car packages list certain cars as "best for track". Those likely will be your best bet to gift with it.
🔵 STORAGE: It's pretty big. It folds up but is still significantly bulky especially if you're limited on storage space as it is. We put hooks on the wall in her closet to hang it but note that it is still a bit bulky (since it's not flat against the wall) and a little heavy which could be tricky for younger kiddos to maneuver/lift up.
🔵 CONS: While we don't have any complaints- 2 potential cons (depending on circumstances): Needing batteries to use (as mentioned above) and it being a bit bulky (especially if you have limited space).
🔵 OVERALL: My whole family has been loving it. I'm confident that if we had purchased this outside of the Vine program- we still would love it. The motorized feature combined with the loop-turns and crashing are exciting and a lot of fun. It's durable and pretty sturdy. Likely will have you busy for a while.
The set came in a box that was probably a bit too small because the tracks were bent to fit inside. These bends made the track performance very inconsistent. One track was squeezed a bit so cars often got pinched and slowed down or even stopped while going through that section. Another was twisted so that cars fall off. Even after trying to bend them back into shape for a couple of hours we could not get a car to complete the track more than 3 times before falling off. Sometimes just the rolling accelerators twisted the car and turned it upside down. In 2 hours we *never* got both tracks to work long enough to even get a single crash.
Even if it had worked, my boys thought it was too loud. It is by far the loudest toy I have ever heard. It might have just been our unit but it sounded like a leaf blower. We had to keep turning it off as we tweaked and twisted the track back into shape. My boys can tolerate all kinds of loud noise (3 boys can make a lot of noise!) but they were really annoyed by the sound.
In the end, my boys thought that even if it had worked it would have been "kind of boring" (their words). They would prefer a version with a little more strategy and skill, like one where they could control the speed of their car or something like that. They just couldn't imagine it being much fun after just a couple of hours, and neither could I, so we sent it back. We bought a Carrera slot car set instead and they like that a lot more. It is quieter, and offers them control, strategy, and skill (though there is a learning curve, especially for the 6 year old).
