These cars were made in Thailand.
At the time that I ordered it, I had not yet decided whether I would be giving it to someone I know who collects Star Wars memorabilia, or to my 3 year old nephew. The condition of this package leaves no choice- it goes to the 3 year old. Otherwise, it would have been sent back. The cars definitely have a "Star Wars" look to them. One have them has a "dirty chrome" finish that seems rather unique. It states in small print on the back "Not for use with some Hot Wheels sets." So, if this was being considered to play with that way, then it's better to look into some different models. If you are a collector of Star Wars items and the Hot Wheels cars are to be included in your collection, then this is good news for you- one set is definitely not in the collector's market. That will bring this item one set closer to "rare" status.
Mattel items are marked on the bottom. I am able to see that there is lettering on the bottom of these, so I assume that they are legit Mattel. It does not say "die-cast," so if you are used to the older Hot Wheels then be aware of that. In my efforts to shine a light in through the packaging to see whether the lettering is on the bottom, I also saw a large fingerprint on the inside of the plastic. Eww. I'll need to think about whether this even meets "gift for a nephew" status. There are some small details that might excite the right child. There are shiny printed rims on the wheels- silver for one car, red for the other. Both of them have dark, shiny, recessed windshields that look different and cool. An item like this is the "whole package," and in this case the "whole package" falls very short.
