About the author

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and died in 1930. Within those years was crowded a variety of activity and creative work that made him an international figure and inspired the French to give him the epithet 'the good giant'. He was the nephew of 'Dickie Doyle' the artist, and was educated at Stonyhurst, and later studied medicine at Edinburgh University, where the methods of diagnosis of one of the professors provided the idea for the methods of deduction used by Sherlock Holmes.
He set up as a doctor at Southsea and it was while waiting for patients that he began to write. His growing success as an author enabled him to give up his practice and turn his attention to other subjects. He was a passionate advocate of many causes, ranging from divorce law reform and the Channel Tunnel to the issuing of inflatable life-jackets to sailors. He also campaigned to prove the innocence of individuals, and his work on the Edjalji case was instrumental in the introduction of the Court of Criminal Appeal. He was a volunteer physician in the Boer War and later in life became a convert to spiritualism.
His greatest achievement was, of course, his creation of Sherlock Holmes, who soon attained international status and constantly distracted him from his other work; at one time Conan Doyle killed him but was obliged by public protest to restore him to life. And in his creation of Dr Watson, Holmes's companion in adventure and chronicler, Conan Doyle produced not only a perfect foil for Holmes but also one of the most famous narrators in fiction. Penguin publish all the books about the great detective, A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, The Uncollected Sherlock Holmes and The Penguin Complete Sherlock Holmes.

This book is clearly another one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary masterpieces. It has become a classic and developed quite a following throughout the years. Many different adaptations of this story have been made, including major motion pictures and television series. The suspense, complex mystery, and brilliant writing style featured in this novel are responsible for its lasting influence on audiences. The twists and turns of the plot were clearly ahead of their time and seem to be something one might see on television today. Doyle does a fantastic job keeping readers interested until the very end. He incorporates mystery, drama, violence, suspense, and romance in Watson’s recollection of this case. This interesting point of view provides readers with an enormous amount of details. Watson recalls every aspect of the moor and Baskerville Hall, allowing one to feel as though they are actually at the Baskerville estate.
Another factor that contributes to this novels popularity is the choice of diction. The vocabulary used creates an advanced novel that is still easily comprehendible. Not only is the diction easy to understand, but it also contributes to the unpredictable plot twists throughout the story. While a bit slow moving at first, the mystery moves at a satisfying rate as it beings to unfold. Doyle’s gory result in a large fan base today. Readers are left on the edge of their seats as they follow Watson through every twist and turn in this suspenseful plot. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a suspenseful mystery novel.
If you are at all curious, I encourage you to download this e-book's sample version and have a look. You won't find a more suitable way to experience the Sherlock Holmes stories outside the realms of physical collections, and at 99 cents, it's well worth it for the comfort of a well-formatted e-book with this much content in it.

Even worse, it's shockingly badly edited. Everything that should be in italics is either in CAPITALS, or written _like this_. Both are really irritating and unnecessary. Some of the illustrations (which are crucial to several of the stories) are included, but many are missing, with marks like "XXX" to indicate where the slapdash and lazy editor meant to insert them but forgot. There are typos and odd little editorial proof notes that should never have made it to the final version. It's as if they got bored halfway through putting it together.
Unbelievably shoddy.
