The drug store candles I was using left black soot on the walls of my home! I can only imagine what my lungs looked like.
They're a little pricey, but I tried one out and it worked great. Just pull up the wick a bit for a bigger flame. Don't forget to save the caps to re-seal them after you're done using them.
So worth it for the peace of mind.
Duration: I pulled one out to test and I burned it for several hours a night for a couple of weeks. I still have over half of the liquid left. I haven't timed it to see if I can actually get 100 hours out of it, but I'm satisfied that it's close enough.
Light output: It's essentially a candle. These will light a room well enough to navigate around and avoid the furniture, but not much else. Don't expect to be able to read by one of these. One candle should be enough to get you through a week or more if you light it at dark and burn it all night.
Weather: They're pretty useless outdoors. I tried mine on my back porch for a while. In still weather they're OK, but even a slight breeze will make the flame gutter and the light will be almost worthless. Anything stronger will put the flame out. The same applies to walking around with one. You can carry it if you walk very slowly, but you'll have to be careful not to accidentally put it out. These seem to be included in a lot of emergency kits, but I think you'd be better off with a few light sticks instead.
So since the candlelifes are more expensive that the emergency essentials as I write this, bonus!!!
On to the candles:
-They came unidentified in a makeshift sterno candle box (go figure). Mine DID NOT leak like many of the other reviews.
-The brightness was, well, like a candle. Enough to navigate by, but not much more.
-The wicks ARE adjustable, so there's that.
-Have NO idea how long they are good for. I suspect quite a while.
-There is NO wind shield of any type. It you want this there are other option (like sterno https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OBA6WUW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1): These are a much better deal at $18 for 4.
For the candles themselves, they work great. The produce enough light to make a dark room light enough so you don’t go bumping into things. They also have enough light for a romantic setting if you don’t want to burn traditional candles. Might as well use them for something other than emergencies! They are smokeless and odor less which is great as well. For me personally, I have a sensitive nose and that is a big plus.
Good price for 100 hours of burn time
Easy thing to have on hand that you should always be able to get use out of.
If you "give up" on an emergency situation arising, you can always put it in a decorative glass candle holder and go to town.
Poor packaging - some of the "fuel" leaked into the box. It's basically a plastic cap that is supposed to keep the fuel inside the candle. If the box is not always right side up it WILL leak.
Not sure whether to blame this on Amazon or the manufacturer. I tend to lean torwards the manufacturer since I've never had this type of problem with Amazon.
Small wick exposure - Pulled the wick out a little bit to provide more light. Not sure how much this will affect the burn time (I'm sure it will decrease it but hopefully not drastically) but it certainly increased the light output.
