I've read that this book is Sonya Yoerg's debut novel, and that is seriously impressive. This story is beautifully told, skillfully written, and I've already got a copy of her next book in my bag to read this weekend. I look forward to venturing into her world again!
The mother/daughter bond is incredibly strong and always complicated. Yoerg captured this perfectly. Woven within all the novel's relationships is a common thread: your past is yours if you own it. It doesn’t define your future if you face it. Forgiveness is only found in honesty. There are big life lessons here.
A fabulous book club read, without a doubt!
Geneva had always had a difficult relationship with her mother, who was self-destructive and cold. Forced into a situation of housing her mother after a car accident, she comes to understand what made her mother the way she was and was able to come to a place of peace about it, letting go of her hope that things could really change.
Geneva's husband, Tom, seems to have the perfect, supportive family she admired, but never felt a part of. It was so different from her own experience of family. She comes to understand their imperfections too and why tragedy brought them closer, while tragedy tore her childhood family apart.
Geneva's own family struggles to find what each needs from life and each other. When Geneva's mother Helen has to move in with them, she is a very disruptive force, yet her presence brings them closer.
Families are complicated and Sonja captures those difficulties in realistic ways. The book doesn't have a happy ever after ending in the traditional sense. But few family stories can tie off all the loose ends and feel real. There is just enough closure to work as a story, without losing its authenticity.
