I've been enjoying Jeff Beal's "The Dovekeepers" soundtrack for a while now but I am always looking forward to the next "House of Cards" score. Beal has always maintained a recognizable sound for the series throughout it's three seasons but it's interesting to see how the main title changes slightly to reflect the changing dynamics of the characters and their complex lives. The season 3 score has everything that I've enjoyed from previous releases. The jazzy trumpet, light piano, long dark tones, and haunting strings still conjure up images of the street lights reflecting on the wet pavement of a misty and cold Washington D.C. night. The music is as beautiful as a snake and Beal manages to balance this elegance with just a hint of poison. At times, the music sounds like a modern Shakespearean tragedy with cues like "Losing Rachel" (track 1, disc 1) and "He Was Brave" (track 12, disc 1). I also liked how Beal was able to weave the signature sound of the series within the Arabic music in cues like "Jordan Valley" (track 11, disc 1). It seems like no matter where Frank goes...his sound travels with him.

This score, like the others, have always been favorites to come home and relax to. My "House of Cards" playlist has definitely increased with the addition of this season. Just be careful however. Music can be a highly influential force and we wouldn't want all of this great music to inspire you to join the darker side of politics! The CD is released through Varese Sarabande records and I am glad that they continue to package this as a two disc collection. Disc one has 17 tracks and totals 51 minutes while disc two has 16 tracks totaling 44 minutes. There is also an 8 page insert that contains pictures from the show and credits for the Hollywood Studio Symphony.

I think out of the three "House of Cards" collections I own, this score is probably the most appealing to me. The trials and tribulations of the characters have definitely grown within the story arc and the music reflects this well. Two of my favorites are "God's Ear" (track 17, disc 1) and "Leaving You" (track 15, disc 2). Jeff Beal continues to provide the musical soul to this story with great mastery. It evolves just as the characters do. This collection not only gives a piece of the show for fans to hold onto, but it also provides some wonderful downtime music to kick back and enjoy (and maybe daydream about being a supreme leader). I recommend.
