A dream job as personal chef for the affluent Jorgensen family gives her a stunning venue to live and work in. All seems perfect at the House of Hanging Jade that overlooks the sea, but she soon finds that the family's personal issues and an ex-boyfriend's unwanted arrival on the island may tarnish her fresh start.

Secret relationships, a sudden death and a shark attack at sea put a strain on Kailani as she slowly bonds with the members of the family and lends a friendly ear to sort out some of the issues they face. Her ex is getting more aggressive as she tries to convince him to stay away, will he ever realize their relationship is over? Strange occurrences and another death bring the police in to investigate. Will they find the person(s) behind the violence?

Author Reade weaves a tale of mystery and intrigue in an idyllic, island setting. As the dangers escalate, you hold your breath, waiting to see what will happen next. This is a thriller that will delight the senses and keep you guessing time and time again. A tale of suspense and family dramas, highly recommended!

House of the Hanging Jade is an enjoyable suspenseful mystery with the beautiful background of Hawaii and some tasty dishes made by the main protagonist, Kailani.

Kailani moves back to her home in Hawaii to enjoy the beauty and warm climate after being in the cold winter of Washington, DC. All she wants is to get back to cooking which she loves to do and spend time with her family. But after she finds a job as a chef for an affluent family, the Jorgensens, she realizes that her life is anything but tranquil when her former boyfriend follows her there. A murder on their doorstep and another body found nearby and a shark attack on Kailani threatens to destroy the family.

The author has created an enjoyable suspenseful mystery with plenty of twists and turns that kept this reader engrossed and eager to find out who was responsible. Would Kailani be safe from her insane ex-boyfriend? Will life ever return to normal for any of them?

Well, I guess you will have to read this book to find out. A engrossing read that will keep you on your toes and thinking. Also, I enjoyed the recipes with all kinds of Hawaiian fish by Kailani within the story.

Author Amy Reade catches readers immediately as we shiver with her main character, Kailani, in a wintry Washington, D.C. day and rejoice with her when she decides to move back to Hawaii and her family roots. The story immerses us in the beauty of the big island, the happiness of Kailani to be back near her family and to find a fascinating job as a chef for a wealthy family. Her life turns topsy-turvy from then on, and Reade keeps us turning the pages to find out how Kailani will make it through the 'perfect job' with an imperfect family. The novel includes delicious Hawaiian meals that Kailani makes for this family and danger with a too-flirty wife, unhappy children, a frustrated husband, not to mention the sharks and much worse, an ex-boyfriend who stalks and endangers the main character. The combination of sights, smells, tastes, and danger make for a delightful suspense.

This book has a great setting (Hawaii), wonderful characters, twists and turns and a few surprises. My reading time is limited, but I couldn’t wait to pick this one up every day to see what would happen next.

I always enjoy a lighter read when I travel, and this fit the bill. Great setting of Hawaii, yummy scenes about food, and enough mystery to keep me guessing. I enjoyed the fluent writing style and the wonderful descriptions, particularly of the Hawaiian landscape and the culinary delights. There are heavier themes of marital strife, adultery, and stalking though, so the book has ample literary heft. Made my plane ride fly by.
