What a superb CD - I love it. Listened to it over and over on first go. I have been a big fan of Katie Melua for some time and this did not disappoint. Late in getting my review up, but better late than never.
The opening "I'd Love to Kill You" is delightfully creepy and playful. Perhaps my favorite, though it's a touch choice.
"The Flood" is a very dramatic and engaging number. A strong follow up to the opening number. Another one of my favorites.
"A Happy place" is a driving delight. "A Moment of Madness" is another theatrical sounding number that will have you swaying along to it rhythms. "Red Balloons" is a soft ballad. Then we get another charming and unique take on things with "Tiny Alien" which is another wonderfully inventive song. With a beautiful melody and some nice electronic touches.
"No Fear of Heights" is a beautiful love song. The strength of a loving relationship brings triumphs in a troubled world.
"The One I Love is Gone" is a sad and haunting take on love lost. Some nice slide. Sort of a bluesy, folksy lament.
"Plague of Love" then turns around and celebrates love found. Ah, the joy of that passionate feeling!
"God on the drums, Devil on the Bass" is a fun song. A driving manifesto of life.
"Twisted" is another angle on love and the over powering emotions it brings.
"The House" is quite worthy of being the title track (though "I'd love to Kill You" would have also been a good choice). A very beautiful song, with lush accompaniment and a nice refrain.
I like the range of topics and emotions touched upon on this CD. It captures a lot of diverse feelings and situations.
But it is the usual beauty of Katie's vocals and phrasing and the wonderful vocal and acoustic accents that delight throughout and make this such a pleasure. And I like very much the focus on the vocals and acoustic sounds, and the simple, laid back production values. The tunes burst forth with life and tickle the ears.
I can see where some fans might be put off by the different twist in the path this CD takes, but I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it. I love when an artist tries something a little different!
