This book is a very different look at WWll through the eyes of a grand daughter in present times. Chapter by chapter you are given a look at the present and then transported to Germany and France right before the Germans marched into France. The struggles of a young German man whose family is pushing him to join hitlers army is at the center of the story.
I really enjoyed the character development and was intrigued enough to have a hard time putting this book down. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I enjoyed this story. For 80% of it I would have easily given it a 5 star rating. I found myself trying to work out what the crunch was going to be and - personal issue here - I must confess I was slightly under whelmed by the ending, hence the 4 stars. But I would stress that is my opinion. I'm sure others will be equally as certain that it was quite momentous. I enjoyed the style of the story too - how the present seemed to be a mirror image of the past in places. Overall, like I said, I enjoyed it and was not disappointed.

I loved this book, broke my heart. I did feel the end a bit short/rushed. I do believe that when Anna finds out what happened with Max and Isabelle that Wil should have been with her, as he had been instrumental in helping her. Overall I really enjoyed the book, just would have preferred maybe another chapter or two. We never hear Max's point of view.

I have enjoyed all three of the books the author built around the fascinating abandoned apartment in Paris. Though this book required a bit more suspension of belief. I still enjoyed it, and I like how the three books stand alone yet are also interconnected.

This story was about Anna on a quest to help her grandfather find a ring. This led to many questions in a series of events that happened to Anna's grandfather, Max. His family growing up in the beautiful home called the Schloss, falling in love with a beautiful French woman who lived with her grandmother during the 1930's and then the eventual German occupation of Paris, where the young French woman had no choice but to flee.
Anna is determined to find the answers to her grandfather's life in Germany and the reason he left his beloved country for America. The events go back and forth between the 1930's in Europe to the present in San Francisco.
Loved this story and way it was written.

This novel doesn't give you entertainment but a lesson all people must think of. This etched my mind "I think regret is the saddest thing we can have in this life. It’s what we miss out on, what we don’t do . . . that causes the worst sort of pain. Because you never will know what might have been. The chances we didn’t take. How different our lives may have turned out . . . if we had made different choices. We will never know if we don’t do them, if we don’t act.”

Great novel by the author. Well-written. The ending was hanging though. I want to see how Anna and Wil ended.

I even goggles Marthe De Florian's apartment in Paris. I'm in awe how beautiful and preserved her treasures for 70 years.

I loved the plot and the characters were almost believable. (:>). I had a hard time figuring out what was so important to Max to retrieve to ask his granddaughter to go to Germany to retrieve it. It was a little hard to believe that an attorney would be such a push over for a sob story and that the owner of the house would be so rigid - all things considered.

Basic storyline was OK. I was bored and my mind wandered while reading. This book was worth the small amount I paid for it. Max wasn't a grandfather I would look up too.

This book was as bubbly and wonderful as cool sparkling lemonade on a hot day. It seamlessly meshed past and present to create àn enticing tale.

The House by the Lake is wonderfully written. It's a non-stop Reading ! It's my first Ella Carey Reading, it will not be the last. I was impressed by the narrative, The novel focuses on love for family, the sacrifices individuals make to surpass society prejudices for their love, and the courage of those who fought and resisted tyranny and the brutality, even against their family political believes . I strongly recommend "The House on the Lake`
