It is a love story, a vampire story, a mystery, a fantasy. Alivia Ryan has inherited her until now, unknown father’s antebellum mansion, his servants and Rath, a manservant whose loyalty to the Conrath family goes deep in a small town called Silent Bend, Mississippi. Along with the estate comes money, suspicion, secrecy, and an introduction into a society she knew nothing about. Life in Silent Bend is typical of that thought of an old river town along the Mississippi, replete with Spanish moss and old-south charm; under those southern manners, there lies a deep-seated fear of going out after dark.
Ian Ward, a self-proclaimed protector of Silent Bend has his hands full being an EMT, however, after Alivia arrives things become more complicated. Add to the mix a “shunned House” (of vampires), Ian’s not so sweet but sassy Grandmother Lula, and a younger sister, Elle who is a whiz at chemistry, the very real ‘threat’ of the King, and a mysterious legend combined with the eclectic townspeople, and you have quite the tale.
Much more detail would spoil the story, but I sincerely love what she has done to these vampires to make them hers. Since this is a series, Ms. Taylor would be remiss if she did not include at least one “cliff-hanger” and I must say, “WHAT!!??” I am ready for the next book to arrive!!
The main character, Alivia Ryan, is thrown into a world she knows nothing about after the passing of a father she never knew. She moves to a town she knows nothing about and notices the fear in the townspeople whenever they see her. She is warned not to be out after dark but thinks this is only a protective warning. She quickly learns that the town has a vampire problem and the townspeople tend to steer clear of the vampires whenever possible. Once news travels that Alivia is in town, Rath, her father's best friend and administrator of the estate sends Alivia to stay with Ian who has taken it upon himself to rid the town of vampires. Jasmine, the self proclaimed leader of the house contacts Alivia and lets it be known that she alone has been responsible for the house for fifteen years and will continue to be responsible. Alivia's father never wanted her to be burdened with the politics of the house but with the pressure from Jasmine and the feelings Alivia has towards Ian forces her to make a decision. She can only hope she makes the right one.
Alivia was an interesting character to follow and she was not the only one. All of them were depicted in a way we understand slowly what is coming next.
I also loved the Southern picture and its people. A beautiful voyage in the Mississippi country.
There were some passages that made me doubt about the worth of the story: too slow or too predictable but in the end I was turning page after page with eagerness.
I strongly recommend this: Dark and Addictive!
It took a while to get used to the author’s line editing job. Needs a bit of work, but after a while, I didn’t even notice. Characters do “hiss” a lot. And other things bugged me. Even a few typos, but I am noting these things because readers should know.
