The "haunting" in the story is fresh, different, imaginative, vivid and terrifying!! This book literally kept me on the edge of my seat and I NEEDED to finish. The mood, characters, setting..... just wow. Read this!!
Note to many who have posted claiming that the protagonists did not consummate their marriage- au contraire! It was consummated, the night ( SPOILER) Sophie stayed in Josephs room , after Marie " died". After he tells her the truth about Everything. Just because a sex scene isnt right there in the reader's face , doesn't mean it didn't occur ! I love that - makes it even more like the Gothic romances I used to read , by P.A. Whitney or Victoria Holt. Less is more
