5 out of 5 stars
The story The House that Adelia Built by Mya O’Malley is an amazing book that I absolutely loved reading. It is a beautiful story that includes romance and ghosts. The book goes back and forth between the present day and the late 1800’s. It tells the story of two women, Hope and Adelia. Hope lives in the present day and Adelia lived in the past. You read of Adelia and how her marriage had such a happy beginning and how it changes after her husband moves them to a lighthouse. She finds her husband changing and doesn’t understand why. It is sad to read about how unhappy Adelia is. What happens to this couple? You also read about Hope and how she experiences panic when she is away from the same lighthouse and her home for any period of time. These are two characters that you get to know well by reading about their thoughts and feelings throughout the book. I also enjoyed reading about the character of Clooney. He is the handsome man who is falling for Hope and they are constantly together. This is a book that is both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. It is sad to read of how Hope struggles in her life to leave her home and the way that she believes others see and judge her. It is wonderful to read of how patient Clooney is with Hope and truly wants to help her. Hope finds herself having nightmares/visions that are getting worse. She finds herself investigating what they could mean. What will her investigation uncover? This is a story that has plenty of twists and turns and will have you not wanting to put the book down until you have read the final page. I have read several books by the author and have found her to be an amazing writer who creates amazing characters. Her stories have a way of staying on my mind even after I am done reading them. I can’t wait to read her other books and what she writes in the future.
In 2017 Hope and her best friend Tracy were now living in the house beside the lighthouse on Amity Island and they were trying to discover the past of the area. There was something about the lighthouse that intrigued Hope and she had a hard time leaving it.
As Hope learns about the past she meets Cloony, a local bartender whom she is drawn too. As Hope, Cloony and Tracy learn about the history of the lighthouse they discover that the past is linked to the present in a way they could have never imagined.
This was a super interesting book about linking the past and the future and seeing similarities emerge between the different characters.
I thought Adelia was a great character and I can't imagine how difficult things were for her at the time with it being so long ago and being away from everyone except Augustus and then Devon Bane. She was strong in trying to keep everything together and I really admired her character.
I thought Hope was super interesting too and I really liked her friendship with Tracy. I was so glad that she took a chance with Cloony and I liked how willing he was to help her with everything she was trying to learn.
I must admit that the end was not what I was looking or hoping for but the book was a good read and I look forward to more from the author!
