The one I had before made by a different company which came with the house has lasted us for years. We moved in on 1991 and it only broke when I accidentally cut the line. This cheap thing couldn't last for more than three months. I've included pictures to show you where it broke off. It's like they made this to break quickly so people will buy more. I couldn't return it because they conveniently have a 30 day return policy.
I'd rather place two sticks on the ground and run some ropes around it to make a makeshift clothesline rather than buy this product again. Your best bet is to go old school with this product, as I am going to, if you can find them. I have seen nothing that is made of decent quality today. This company makes most of them and I don't trust their products.
I have found a Sears Disappearing Clothesline made in the 80's or possibly early 90's and it is simply fantastic. Very similar to my original one and made with similar high quality and does not feel cheap like this one. I'm sure that will last me for years to come.
Once both components are mounted, you pull out the clotheslines from the main unit and attach them to the mounting bracket via the metal handle that all the lines are connected to. On the right side of the main unit, there's a knob to adjust the line tension; you turn that to tense the lines to where you want them, then turn the smaller knob on the left side of the unit to the "lock" position, which then will lock the tension in place.
My main issue is that the clotheslines don't maintain tension. Even locked in place, the lines visibly sag under the weight of laundry; we're talking even lightweight stuff, like a line full of T-shirts and undies, maybe 15 pieces tops. They definitely sag more when jeans or pants are hung. We also have one rogue line that never quite GETS tense even when the rest of them do, so even when we've adjusted the tension and locked it in, that particularly line is still visibly saggy.
Additionally, the knobs are sort of flimsy; I could definitely see an accidentally rough crank or two busting them off.
While overall the clothesline is still functional, the sag of the lines & inability to REALLY tighten them up taught is what gets to me. It's a fair price, but definitely not a high quality product.
The area i use it is half its full length and so i was able to cut off the worn lines and reel out the other half. Now it's as good as new. Looking to purchase a new one in the coming year as standby for when these cords get worn which maybe 2 yrs from now.
